Acapulco chairs are perhaps our favorite indoor/outdoor modern chair. They are expressive, with fun colors, a simple, attractive design, and a classic simplicity. Created in the 1950s in Acapulco, Mexico, these chairs became intertwined with the mid-century Acapulco, where Hollywood royalty and the political elite went to play. Many design firms have come up with their own takes on the Acapulco chair, and one of the most enjoyable versions is Innit’s kid-focused Acapulco chair line. This chair is really made for kids, and not for babies, but the name “Baby Acapulco Chair” sounds better than “Children’s Acapulco Chair” so we get it. Regardless, this is a cool designer kids chair with a lot of flexibility.
In this article, we will look closely at the Baby Acapulco Chair and consider its strengths and weaknesses.
What is an Acapulco Chair?
The Acapulco chair was originally designed in Acapulco, Mexico by an unknown designer. Supposedly it was originally conceived as a marriage of the Mayan-style hammock, and a designer lounge chair. The woven supports echo the hammock, and the metal frame and seat position stem from traditional lounge chairs.
These chairs became synonymous with mid-century Acapulco and were quite common at the time. While a few still exist, most originals have been trashed over the years. Most originals did not feature powder-coated metal frames, so they would gradually rust outdoors. Additionally, many of the woven cords had to be replaced due to prolonged sun exposure. Consequently, getting an actual original is difficult.

Who Needs a Baby Acapulco Chair?
Not someone with babies! Babies won’t fit in a Baby Acapulco chair, and you’re generally supposed to support their neck, so we would suggest an Eames-style Lounger for the baby (kidding… don’t want to get spit-up on one of those.)
In reality, the Baby Acapulco Chair is more appropriate for kids in the 3-10 range, so if you get one for your baby, just be patient. They will fit into it eventually.
The Acapulco chair is so attractive because it is a fun designer chair that is appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use. If you frequently like to sit outside with your kids, the Baby Acapulco Chair can be a great solution — especially if you’re matching it with a few full-sized Acapulco chairs as well!

The Details
Color Options
With its huge variety of color combinations, Innit offers huge amounts of flexibility and opportunity for expression with its Baby Acapulco Chairs. The frames are available in three different colors: chrome, white, and black, and the PE-vinyl cords are available in approximately 9 colors. You can mix and match to get the right chair for your decor.
The Frame
The frame is made from recycled cast iron, which is cool. Cast iron tends to be a bit heavier than steel (which is used by some of Innit’s competitors) but is quite sturdy and appropriate for outdoor use.
Choosing the correct frame color is key here, as the chrome color is only suitable for indoor use; if it is taken outside, the chrome chair will rust. The white and black versions are powder coated for protection and are the appropriate choice for those who wish to use their chairs indoor and outdoor.
We assume that buyers of these chairs will want to use them mostly both indoor and outdoor, so we strongly suggest you stick to the powder coated versions. If you live in an area that doesn’t receive much rain and are diligent about bringing the chair inside when, not in use, then the chrome is probably fine for you.
You should also keep an eye on the powder coat, as it can wear over time. Wear is quite common at the joints of the chair, so keep a close eye at those points. If you find bare metal showing through, touch up the paint with a little Rustoleum paint, and your frame will be well protected for the future.
The Weave
The weave of this chair is made of PE-wicker, which is a type of vinyl. PE Wicker is an outstanding material in terms of its durability and should last for many years, even in the outdoors,
It is UV-resistant, fade resistant, and water-resistant. That said, bringing your Baby Acapulco Chair inside when not in use will certainly increase the life of the chair, as the elements will slowly beat up the chair.
For maximum life, we suggest you bring the Acapulco Chairs inside when done — they’ll look just as great inside as they do outside!
Stackability
These Baby Acapulco Lounge Chairs are easily stored, as they are stackable. If you purchase multiple chairs, you can sit one on top of the other.
However, as we said above, these chairs will look great in your child’s room, or in the living room, so you can always bring them inside for use.
The Bottom Line
The Innit line of Baby Acapulco chairs is a great choice for those looking for a designer kids chair that fits into both an indoor environment and an outdoor environment. These chairs are certainly not cheap, and for noticeably cheaper prices, you can find knock-offs of kids Bertoia Chairs, kids Eames molded plastic chairs, etc.
The major feature that the Baby Acapulco Chair has that these other chairs don’t is the indoor/outdoor capability.
That’s where these chairs shine!
If you’re looking for indoor/outdoor, then the Baby Acapulco Chair may be for you (or rather, for your kids). If you’re looking only for an indoor designer kids chair, we suggest you choose another chair.
