Best Cantilever Umbrella Base Weight
All cantilever umbrellas need to be weighted down in order to prevent them from falling over. If users don’t support their offset umbrella, it will likely topple over in a wind gust. This will damage the umbrella, and damage your guests! After a great deal of research, we have determined that the best cantilever umbrella base weight is the EasyGoProducts 60 Liter Weighted Cantilever Umbrella Weight Base [Amazon Link].
This unit can supply up to 211 lbs of weight when filled with sand, or 135 lbs when filled with water. Its major differentiating feature is that it has wheels to enable users to easily move their cantilever umbrella when necessary. The EasyGoProducts base is thoughtfully designed and has a fantastic feature set. That said, it’s not cheap!

Runner-Up: Best Cantilever Umbrella Weight
Don’t need mobility? Don’t want to pay the premium to move your umbrella around? If so, the Abba Patio Plastic Umbrella Base Weight Set [Amazon Link] is for you!
This four-piece umbrella weight set offers great functionality, a low profile, and an outstanding quality-to-price ratio. The Abba Patio can supply 150-180lbs of weight, depending on the mix of sand and water used, and is quite beefy. It is a good quality mid-range hanging umbrella base weight. It doesn’t have wheels, but each piece can be taken apart, and when divided into four pieces, isn’t so heavy to move around.

Budget Pick: Best Cantilever Umbrella Weighted Base
Our budget choice is the Gravipod 14″ x 14″ square umbrella weight bag [Amazon Link]. This weighted umbrella base is a good option if your offset umbrella isn’t huge, or is in an area that is sheltered from the wind.
The Premier Tents Gravipod square umbrella weight bag can hold about 65lb of weight. For larger umbrellas (roughly 8′ and larger), this isn’t likely going to cut it. If you need more weight, you could consider getting two of these and stacking them for cumulative effect. It won’t look great, but it’s an inexpensive way out.
One concern with these bags is that over time, they are much more likely to be punctured than hard plastic bases are, and cleaning up a big sandy mess is a pain.

Weighing Down a Cantilever Umbrella
Cantilever umbrellas are wonderful sculptures, with metal frames gracefully supporting beautiful canvas. However, if they’re not weighted down properly, they tend to fall over. That ruins the coolness of a cantilever umbrella, and can turn your backyard party into an embarrassing disaster! For that reason, you will typically need a cantilever umbrella weight base.
The good news is that you can properly support an offset umbrella base to ensure that it doesn’t fall down in a slight breeze. If you want to roll up your sleeves and do a little DIY, it is quite possible to use the standard cross base for your cantilever umbrella, and weigh that base down properly (click here to view our guide).
For many, the DIY path is the best solution and is certainly easiest on the wallet. But for those who don’t want to see unsightly bags of sand, permanently anchor their offset umbrella stand to a single location, or have to pull out the power tools, it may well be easier to use a purpose-built weighted base for your umbrella.
Typical base weights are filled with water, sand, stone, or even plants to create a solid foundation for your umbrella. Purpose-made are not fixed to a specific spot, allowing you to move your umbrella where you want. These bases are also generally more attractive than the cross base that comes on most standard cantilever umbrellas.

Here we will look at several different options for umbrella base weights, and consider the positives and negatives of each. We’ll start with a comparison table, and then go into detail on each base.

1. EasyGoProducts Universal Offset Umbrella Base Weight
The EasyGoProducts Weighted Cantilever Umbrella Base is our favorite pick for a hanging umbrella base, due to its outstanding feature set, high weight capacity, and ease of use. It bolts directly to the standard cross base that comes with most cantilever umbrellas and can be filled with either sand or water.
The EasyGoProducts base is not super low profile, but most people won’t be looking at the umbrella base, so most won’t mind the look. The weight capacity and portability make this unit an outstanding choice.
Key Points at a Glance
- Dimensions: 31.75″ L x 24″ W x 7″ H
- Weight Capacity: up to 211lbs
- Pole Hole Diameter: 2 5/8″
- Wheels included
The Details
The EasyGoProducts cantilever umbrella weight has a 60-liter capacity. The base can be filled with either water or sand, or a mixture of the two. Water supplies 135lbs at capacity, and sand supplies 211 lbs at capacity, so this base can hold a lot! Water is easier to drain out when you’re done using it, but sand supplies more weight.
We encourage users to view the literature on their specific cantilever umbrella for recommended weight amounts and choose the right fill material for their needs.
The base has an easy fill hole (though a funnel is always helpful!) and a drain cap on the bottom as well for easy removal.
The EasyGoProducts offset umbrella weight is pretty easy to set up and use. It comes with all the bolts and hardware needed, and includes a cross base tailored to the EasyGoProducts base.
Attach your umbrella to the included cross base, and secure it as normal. Note: if your umbrella isn’t compatible with the included cross base, you can swap it out for your own cross base as well.
The hole through the base is capable of handling umbrella pole diameters of 2.57″ — larger than most conventional cantilever umbrella poles.
The Bottom Line: The Best Cantilever Umbrella Base
When all is said and done, most people looking for cantilever umbrella weights want one thing: a large weight capacity. The EasyGoProducts offers a large weight capacity, and with it adds the super useful feature of portability.
The umbrella base isn’t easy to move, but it can be moved without taking everything apart, which is a great feature.
In the end, the EasyGoProducts offset umbrella base is our favorite cantilever umbrella weight.

2. Abba Patio Plastic Umbrella Base Plate Set for Cantilever Offset Umbrella
The Abba Patio Plastic Umbrella Base Plate Set is a high-quality cantilever umbrella weight consisting of four triangular shaped wedges that can each be filled with water or sand, or a mixture of water and sand. These wedges attach to the existing cross base of your umbrella and provide strength and stability.
They can be easily removed, and individually, are not particularly heavy. When all four are secured to an umbrella base, though, they provide good weight.
Key Points at a Glance
- Made of four triangular sections
- Dimensions: 20″ L x 20″ W x 3.7″ H (per wedge)
- Weight Capacity: up to 160lbs
- Designed to attach to existing cross base
The Details
Each of the four wedges of the Abba Patio base weight can be filled with 38-44lbs of sand/water mix, for a total base weight of 120-160lbs. Like the Coolaroo wedge base described below, the Abba Patio can be taken apart and moved individually if necessary, making the movement of the unit a bit easier than if it was one monolithic base weight.
The wedges are made of UV-resistant plastic, and are about 20″ wide, by about 3.7″ high — pretty similar dimensions to the Coolaroo, though this setup can hold slightly more weight.
The cap design on these plastic pieces is a bit lacking, and consequently, the unit has some difficulty holding water. We recommend using sand with the Abba Patio Offset Umbrella Weights, as water or concrete can drip out. If you plan to have a water-weighted base, we strongly recommend using one of the other base weights on our list.
The Bottom Line: A Great Offset Umbrella Base
The Abba Patio Cantilever Umbrella Weight Base works well when filled with sand (but less well when filled with water), and has one of the highest weight capacities of any of the units we have reviewed.
It is our runner-up choice for a cantilever umbrella weight, hitting the right mix of capacity, functionality, and price. We’re big fans of most everything Abba Patio does, and this umbrella base is no exception.

3. Gravipod 14″x14″ Square Umbrella Base Weight Bag
The Gravipod 14″x14″ Square Cantilever Umbrella Weighted Base by Premier Tents is a good solution for securing your offset patio umbrella. This polyester bag can handle up to 65lbs of sand and or stone and sits comfortably on top of your existing cross base.
If you add some patio blocks for additional weight below the bag, or a plate (as shown), this base will supply a great deal of the holding power needed to keep a cantilever umbrella properly weighted, even during windy days.
Key Points at a Glance
- Made of polyester with PVC lining
- Dimensions: 14″ L x 14″ W x 6″ H
- Weight Capacity: up to 65lbs
- Designed to sit on existing cross base
- Can act as a supplement to other bases, and can be stacked for cumulative weight
The Details
The Premier Tents Gravipod base is an inexpensive base weight bag that provides decent weight, but in many circumstances, is not enough to weight an umbrella by itself. Many have found that the base is not strong enough to hold their umbrella by itself, so if you go in this direction, you may need to consider additional options as well.
One of the keys to proper setup is to be sure it is filled up to its maximum capacity (65lbs) to ensure as much holding weight as possible. Additionally, it may be necessary to supplement it with patio blocks beneath, or whatever base design fits with your umbrella.
In fact, two of these bases piled on top of each other would double the weight capacity, though it may look awkward.
The intake valve on the Gravipod setup is rather small, which can make the initial filling of the bag somewhat difficult. A funnel or a thick piece of paper rolled up into a funnel shape, is recommended to aid in filling. Also, when you are filling the bag, cover the Velcro seams with some sort of tape. The tape will ensure that the Velcro doesn’t get contaminated with sand particles and refuse to close.
The Bottom Line: An Inexpensive Offset Umbrella Weight
If your umbrella is not particularly large, or if you’re not in a super-windy area, the PremierTents Gravipod is a good solution to weighing down your umbrella. But you may find that you need more to get to a complete weight solution.
It is surprisingly inexpensive but offers a good deal of weight capacity. As a bonus is available through Amazon Prime!

4. Abba Patio Stainless Steel Square Umbrella Base/Planter With Two Wheels
This entry is a bit of a curveball. The Abba Patio Stainless Steel Square Umbrella Base/Planter with Two Wheels is a creative solution for a weighted umbrella base. It’s essentially a 25-pound block of dark brown metal with wheels attached, and the block can be filled with additional weighted material and ultimately used as a planter. Very cool idea!
Obviously, if you’re going to use your cantilever umbrella with a table, and the base is going to be out of sight, this solution is probably not very useful to you.
Key Points at a Glance
- Dimensions: 17″ L x 17″ W x 10″ H
- Weight Capacity: approximately 125lb
- Cantilever umbrella base doubles as a planter
- Has wheels for ease of movement
The Details
The Abba Patio Planter/Base can be used with cantilever umbrellas, but it’s not exclusively designed for offset umbrellas. You will almost certainly not be able to use the cross base in conjunction with this Planter/Base. Also, you will likely need to fill the planter with a good deal of stone (or even concrete) and then add some soil and plants on top. The base is 17″ x 17″ x 10″, and even when filled with heavy material, can be wheeled around with the attached two wheels. You’ll just need to use the umbrella pole for steering and leverage. It requires some muscle to move when weighted heavily!
The soil you add will likely dry out over time and lose a good bit of its weight, so consider installing some stone or concrete to start really is necessary. The Abba Patio Planter Base can hold about 1.5 cubic feet of material total. 1 cubic foot of stone weighs about pounds 85 lbs. When the additional weight from soil and plants, plus the 25lb weight of the planter itself are added, you’ll get to around 125lbs in this configuration.
This base has four drainage holes in the bottom for water flow. If you’re going to pour concrete in the box and you still plan on putting plants on top, be sure to preserve the openings for water flow. It has a post hole diameter of 2.2″, and you should check your cantilever umbrella pole width to ensure that it will fit in the cavity. There is a clamp that can tighten the pole around the base should your pole be narrower than the 2.2″.
The Bottom Line: Expensive, But Cool Umbrella Base Weight
This patio umbrella base with wheels is a bit more expensive than some of the others on this list. But if you figure in the fact that you’re also getting an attractive planter that might easily cost $40-50 separately, it’s really not much more expensive than the other models.
If your cantilever umbrella isn’t huge, and the base is in a visible location that gets sun, the Abba Patio planter/base is a great option.

5. Coolaroo Cantilever Umbrella Water Weight
The Coolaroo Offset Umbrella Base Water Weight is a clever design and is quite similar to the Abba Patio wedge system we examined above. It is a clover-shaped base of four individual umbrella weights for cantilever units that attaches to a standard cross-base of an offset umbrella. (Note: the cross base is not included, but should be included in your cantilever umbrella package).
Each of the wedges is an individual weight and can be filled with sand or water.
Coolaroo has been a popular cantilever umbrella manufacturer for years, and they know their stuff!
Key Points at a Glance
- Made of four triangular sections
- Dimensions: 20″ L x 20″ W x 3″ H (per wedge)
- Weight Capacity: up to 130lbs
- Designed to attach to existing cross base
The Details
When filled with water, the Coolaroo Base will weigh 105lbs, and when filled with sand it will weigh 130lbs. The nice thing about this design is that, should you need to move the unit, each of the petals is only 25-35 lbs. That makes things a bit easier than trying to move a single 100+lb unit.
This base is surprisingly wide, with each piece being almost 20″ long, so the total base is a square about 3’6″ wide. While some may feel this is too wide for a base, the plus side of the large width is that it has a low profile, only 3″ tall. Consequently, there’s no big chunk to get in the way of an errant step. When filling the base, be sure to use a funnel or stiff piece of rolled up paper to aid in directing sand or water to the right spot.
The Bottom Line: A Decent Quality Overhang Umbrella Base
The Coolaroo four-piece system works well, offers a significant weight capacity, and if you can deal with the dimensions, is a good solution to weighing down your offset umbrella.
It’s a bit more expensive than the similar Abba Patio design above, and we see them as somewhat interchangeable.

6. Offset Umbrella Weight – Works Also for Market Umbrella (WHITE)
The UmbrellaWaterWeight water-weighted cantilever umbrella base weight is an ingenious design that offers some significant flexibility. These umbrella weight bags are made of heavy-duty 18oz vinyl and are inflatable.
As it is filled with water, it expands to full dimension and supplies up to about 140lbs of weight. The base is soft and round, so there will be no banging of flip-flopped toes on sharp corners.
One advantage of this is when the unit needs to be moved, you can just empty the water from the bag, and then re-fill it at its new location, rather than lugging a fully-weighted base around your patio area. It is also easy to store, as it packs down like a pool float to a small bag size.
Key Points at a Glance
- Made of Heavy Duty 18oz Vinyl
- Dimensions: 15″ L x 7″ W x 5″ H
- Weight Capacity: up to 140lbs
- Designed to sit on existing cross base
- Handles tend to deteriorate in the sun
The Details
Make sure to get the bag situated around the base before it is filled with water, as it is extremely difficult to get this product set up once it has been filled. Just slip the empty weight hole around the umbrella shaft, and then begin filling it with water.
It takes approximately six minutes to fill full, and it ultimately weighs about up to 140lbs when filled fully. However, many users find it’s hard to fill it completely, and land about 2/3 full, for around 100lbs of weight.
If that is still not enough for your umbrella, you may need to add patio blocks or other additional weights on the base (note: be sure to add those blocks before you fill the bladder up with water!).
Alternately, you could put some sand in the bag (which is heavier than water) and then fill up the remainder of the bag with water.
The build quality on these is acceptable, though the handles tend to deteriorate rapidly in the sun, especially if they are used to try to move the water weight when nearly full. Be prepared for the handles to rip off after a year or two.
The Bottom Line: A Simple Hanging Umbrella Water Weight
The UmbrellaWaterWeight is an effective offset patio umbrella base weight, but it is really not our favorite. It may need to be combined with patio blocks in order to get an ideal amount of weight on the umbrella, which is a bit of a hassle that most of the other bases do not have.
However, if you like the look, it is a decent cantilever umbrella weight base.
