Indoor Hammock Buyer’s Guide
In this section we will cover several different aspects of choosing, installing, and using your indoor sleeping hammock. This buyer’s guide is intended to inform and help give context to the right indoor hammock bed for each individual’s circumstances.
Who Needs an Indoor Sleeping Hammock?
For centuries, people have used hammocks for relaxation, rest, and rejuvenation. If you go back in time far enough, several cultures slept in them almost exclusively, as a replacement for a traditional western bed. They were also commonly used by sailors on ships crossing the ocean.
Many people find them to be extremely comfortable. The lack of pressure points and the gentle swaying motion at the core of the design of a hammock make them an attractive option for many people to use as a permanent bed replacement.
This trend has begun to bring the hammock inside the house, to great effect. They can even be breathtaking in design, in the right space with the right hammock.
Small Space Living
For those who have small spaces, indoor hammocks can be a great solution. For students who live in dorm rooms, those of us who live in studios and small apartments in the city, etc., each square foot of living space is important. A traditional bed takes up a huge amount of space and is impractical to move when not in use.
Indoor Hammocks for Bedroom
Hammocks can be an extremely efficient replacement for a traditional mattress and box spring bed. Sleeping hammocks can be removed and folded up in the morning, and they take up essentially no space when not in use. When bedtime arrives, you can get the hammock set up and get ready for bed in only a few seconds.
Body Aches and Pains
Many who have aches and pains find that sleeping on a traditional mattress with coils to be uncomfortable. Back pain, sciatica, joint pain, etc.: all of these can make sleeping in a bed uncomfortable.
The coils can press into certain areas of the back and hips and cause pain and discomfort over time. Hammocks can solve this problem nicely, and may be an excellent option for those with body discomfort.
Those Who Love Relaxation
Who doesn’t like to relax? Many people have hammock setups in their yard, on the patio, or like to use a hammock when camping. It’s easy enough to bring that system inside, and if you already have the hammock, all you need is the mounting hardware or stand. If you haven’t checked them out, it is definitely worth look at inflatable loungers, too!
How to Set Up Your Indoor Hammock
There are a few common ways to set up a hammock for indoor use. The most common ways are to use a hammock stand and to use hammock anchors.
Hammock Stands
Hammock Stands are custom-designed frames for hammocks. They are typically made of either metal or wood and act as a support for the hammock. Most metal hammock stands are portable and can be taken down and stored in about 10 to 15 minutes. Conversely, these stands usually take about 10 to 15 minutes to reassemble.
For those who would like to use the hammock to sleep every night, this solution may not be ideal. However, there is no need to have permanent anchors to the walls or ceiling, which is a big advantage for renters or those unfamiliar with drills and power tools.
Additionally, there is no concern about structural loads on the walls and ceilings, as the stand supports all the weight of the hammock and user.
If you wish to use a hammock stand, you’ll need to determine the appropriate size for the corresponding hammock. Generally, the stand should be a couple of feet shorter than the total length of the hammock, to allow for the appropriate amount of sag for hanging.
If you are interested in purchasing a hammock and stand combo, please take a look at our reviews and buyer’s guide here.
Hammock Anchors
Hammock anchors are the preferable method for suspending a hammock in an indoor space. These anchors are typically a set of lag bolts, carabiners, and eyelets that enable a hammock to be safely attached to a wall or ceiling.
It is critical that the anchors be properly installed. They must be attached to a structural member, usually a wall stud or ceiling joist.
Depending on the circumstances, there may be more required then simply drilling into a stud. A 400-pound weight on a hammock can put as much as 1,000lbs pounds of force at the anchor point, so depending on the amount of weight in the hammock, it may be necessary to spread the load out somewhat.
To do this, one would create a wall plate using a piece of 2×6 lumber. That lumber would be anchored horizontally on the wall across multiple studs, spreading the load. The hammock anchor would be installed into the stud at that point.
Another consideration is that vertical walls are not really designed for heavy point loads pulling them inward. The strength of a stud is largely vertical, not horizontal.
Attaching the anchors to the top plate of a wall, much more strict can be changed. Alternatively, by attaching the anchors ceiling joist comma more strength can be obtained.
Double Hammocks and Two Person Sleeping Arrangements
There are many hammocks that can support well over 400 pounds and some that will support up to 700 pounds. That said, if you plan on using a hammock for everyday sleeping indoors, we suggest getting one unit per person, and attaching each one individually to separate structural points.
While snuggling up to your loved one is nice, you don’t want to put too much weight on the walls and ceilings! Typically the anchor itself will not fail; rather the wall stud will. The metal anchor can support several thousand pounds of weight but the wall stud is much weaker, and you really don’t want wall studs cracking!
If the users are pushing 300lbs+, you should really consider your mount points, and the weight you’re putting on your anchors.
Types of Hammock
There are two common classes of hammock available on the market today. The first type of hammock is the bed style hammock, and the second type is the cocoon hammock.
Bed Style
Bed Style hammocks typically feature spreader bars on each end of the hammock, which serves to spread a weave of mesh out across a surface area. This forms a bed-like structure, somewhat similar to a traditional mattress on a traditional bed.
The user climbs in the hammock and is suspended between the spreader bars.
The problem with these hammocks is that they are prone to tipping over! With the spreader bars, it is easy to go off balance and to lose position. If you intend to sleep in your hammock, would strongly suggest you consider a cocoon style hammock.
Cocoon Style
There are many different cocoon style hammocks, and while each has subtle differences, all have the same basic premise. You’ll see the names Brazilian, Mayan, Nicaraguan, etc. These all describe a similar style hammock that does not have spreader bars.
Cocoon hammocks instead have a wide fabric base which wraps around the user, enveloping them in the fabric. Cocoon style hammocks are generally much more stable and much more comfortable for sleeping in than bed style hammocks are.
For this reason, we would strongly suggest choosing one of these hammocks for an indoor bedroom hammock.
That said, some users might be intimidated by the idea of being wrapped up in the fabric. Usually, the fabric can be folded down if necessary, and The Sensation of being bunched up can be mitigated by sleeping at an angle to the hammock.
When using a cocoon hammock, position yourself at a 30′ or so angle to the direction of the hammock, and the fabric won’t bunch up around you as much as if you are in it at a straight angle.
Comfort Considerations
There are several aspects of comfort to keep in mind when contemplating switching to indoor hammock beds for sleeping. These include temperature considerations, fabric types, and ease of access.
Temperature
Because hammocks have open air underneath them, they can get cold when the temperature drops. Fortunately, all that is needed is a nice cozy blanket. You may need to wrap yourself more thoroughly in the blanket then you would on a typical bed, but it is a minor adjustment.
Additionally, pillows are usually a nice comfort feature and will help in a hammock.
Fabric Type
Depending on the type of hammock, and the chosen materials, you may find certain material classes will feel scratchy or otherwise uncomfortable on the skin. Typically a simple cotton hammock is good in these situations.
Polyester fabric may be a little cheaper and may last longer for outdoor use, but if you plan on using a hammock night after night for sleeping, be sure to find one that is not uncomfortable on the skin!
Getting In and Out
Some people will struggle to get in and out of a hammock. Those with aches and pains may find it awkward to climb out of the hammock while pushing fabric out of the way and getting themselves extracted. This typically becomes an insignificant issue once a user gets used to sleeping in a hammock, but it is something to be considered.
For those who are looking to switch to a hammock bed for health reasons, it may be wise to start out for a couple of nights has a test run before getting rid of the bed!
Indoor Hammock Reviews
Here we look at several of the best indoor sleeping hammocks and consider the positives and negatives of each.
1. WeHammock: The Comfiest Two-Person Double Cozy Brazilian Nest Hammock
The WeHammock is an attractive, comfortable Brazilian style cocoon hammock that is well suited to be an indoor sleeping hammock. It is available in two color schemes and is made of 100% cotton.
The WeHammock includes a few nice extras like a set of tree straps for hanging it outdoors, and also extra rope and a carrying case.
Key Features at a Glance
- Brazilian-style cocoon hammock
- Available in two color options
- Carrying case included
- Tree straps and extra rope included
- Two weight capacity options
Dimensions and Weight Capacity
- Fabric Bed Area: 98″ x 58″
- Total Hammock Length: 9’6″
- Weight Capacity: 250lbs on single, 475lbs on double
The Details
The WeHammock features a comfortable fabric that is appropriate for sleeping in full time, and comes in two cheerful color palettes. The carrying case is nice for packing it away when it’s not in use (though it’s difficult to get the hammock back in there once it’s been taken out).
This lightweight hammock is good for indoor sleeping arrangements, as well as backpacking, camping, and general backyard hammock use.
Generally, you’re going to want mount points about 10-11′ apart to hang this hammock. The additional rope allows some flexibility in mounting setup. A 9′-10′ stand would work, as would anchors set out about 10-12′ apart.
Cleaning and General Care
A nice feature of the WeHammock is the ease of cleaning. This hammock is machine washable, though we would suggest you air dry it just as a precaution. Use a mild detergent and it will look great.
For general care, we recommend not leaving this hammock out in a sunny area for a long time (or exposed to the elements if you’re intending to use it outside too!). While the fabric is “color fast”, the sun will degrade the cotton, and over time will damage it.
The Bottom Line
The WeHammock is a nice indoor hammock for the bedroom with some attractive accessories at a bargain price. Given that the included hammock straps alone often cost about 1/2 what this whole package costs, it really is a good deal, even as a spare hammock.
An additional plus to this package is the 30 day no questions return policy offered. If you don’t like it, they’ll take it back, no problem.
It’s hard to go wrong with this one, it is one of the best indoor sleeping hammocks.

Cleaning and General Care
The Hammock Sky Brazilian hammock can only be hand-washed and air-dried. It is best to use only mild detergents with this hammock, as the colors can be damaged.

Prolonged exposure to the sun will damage the NOVICA hammock’s fibers, even if it’s indoors. If it will be in a sunny space, you should probably take it down when not in use. 4. Vivere Brazilian Style Double Hammock
The Vivere Brazilian Style Double Hammock line is a great choice for indoor hammocks. This line of hammocks has nine color designs to choose from, all of them cheerfully colored with the exception of a beautiful, minimal ecru natural fiber that may be our favorite.
These hammocks made of 100% cotton, and are tightly woven for comfort. Included in this package is a zippered carrying bag.
Key Features at a Glance

Dimensions and Weight Capacity
- Fabric Bed: 95″ x 63″
- Total Hammock Length: 13′
- Weight Capacity: 450lbs
The Details
The Vivere hammock is quite comfortable for everyday indoor or outdoor use. The fabric is somewhat like a canvas, but softer. It offers good support, but also feels pretty good on the skin.
This hammock will fit in a stand up to 15′ in length (with extra chain needed). A 12′ stand is probably about right for it, ideally, though you could go shorter and tie the rope in a knot to match.
Cleaning and General Care
This hammock has metal ends, so it cannot be washed in a washing machine. It is best to hand wash it and let it air dry. For cleaning, use a mild detergent and water.
The thread is color-fast cotton, though we would suggest not testing the color fastness by leaving it out in the sun. The Bottom Line
The Vivere Brazilian Double Hammock is a really nice option for a hammock if you’re looking for something colorful and vibrant. The wide variety of color options make these hammocks quite expressive, and they will look great both indoors and outdoors!
