If for any reason the Fire Pit Essentials Blends just don’t suit your taste, why not check out the Starfire Glass Fire Glass [Amazon Link] line of glass blends. These are only available in 1/2″ pieces, though in general, we prefer the larger 1/2″ size in most cases anyway.
These, too, are of great quality, with a huge range of colors to choose from and two quantity options for bulk savings. And they are typically a little cheaper, too.

Fire Glass Buyer’s Guide
How Much Fire Pit Glass Do I Need?
Basically, 10 lbs of fire pit glass will cover 200 square inches of area. This would work out to a 10″ x 10″ square fire pit, 2″ deep.
Here is a calculator to determine exactly how much you need. However, as you will see below, you may not need to use fire glass for the bottom inch or so and can use pea gravel or lava rocks instead, in order to save money.
Can I Supplement the Glass with Stone?
You can add pea stone or other stone to supplement your fire glass if you don’t want to buy a large quantity of expensive glass. However, the pea stone must be situated below the burner, so it doesn’t get too hot.
Pea gravel above the burner can get very hot, and can “pop”, causing any glass next to it to shoot out, potentially harming someone.
Does Fire Glass Catch on Fire?
Fire glass doesn’t actually burn, it just acts as a reflector to a propane or natural gas fireplace. It is there to supplement the flame, and to look really cool!
Can I use Fire Pit Glass with a Wood Burning Firepit?
No, it’s not safe to use fire glass with wood-burning fire pits or chimineas. The glass could shatter, pop, or shoot out, potentially harming those seated nearby. Plus, it would get buried in ash, and lose its luster.
Can Fire Glass Be Used with Ventless or Ethanol Fireplaces?
It’s not a great idea to use fire glass with ventless fireplaces, or ethanol fireplaces. These are designed to burn at 99% combustion and to only leave water vapor as a byproduct. By adding fire glass, you’re potentially changing that 99% combustion figure, potentially leading to harmful gases being created.
If your specific fireplace says it’s ok, then go for it, but if not, keep the fire glass away.
Should I get 1/2″ or 1/4″ Fire Glass?
In general, the 1/2″ fire glass is the better choice, in our opinion. Of course, it depends on your specific situation, but 1/2″ fire glass is less likely to clog the vents of your fire pit than 1/4″ is. Also, 1/2″ glass has more surface area and is, therefore, more reflective.
Much is personal preference, though, so if you don’t like the idea of large chunks, you’ll likely be fine with 1/4″, as well.
Can I Mix and Match Colors?
Yes! Depending on what you’re going for, doing a mixed color selection with complementary or contrasting colors or tones can produce a scintillating effect!
Why Is My Fire Glass Turning Black?
Usually, if your glass is staining and turning black, this is because of your fire pit, not the glass. Your fire pit is probably burning inefficiently and is leaving behind a sooty residue that is staining your fire glass. Check your connections and your settings on your fire pit.

This Stanbroil Fire Pit Glass is available in 8 majestic colors and is fantastic value for money. This glass does not actually burn at all, it simply acts as decor for your fire pit, reflecting the flames as they course through the glass, making the whole thing look like a wizard is doing it!
There are two size options, 1/2″ and 1/4″. There is at least some personal preference, but one consideration to keep in mind is that the 1/4″ pieces can be small enough that they can fill in holes in the burner, and choke the flame. Also, the 1/2″ pieces have more surface area for greater reflectivity and don’t pack down quite as tightly, allowing more air to flow through the glass.
To keep this fire pit glass looking its best you can give it a little clean, especially before you use it the first time. The most effective way to do this is by rinsing it with vinegar and water.

In terms of safety, it’s been gently tumbled to ensure there are no sharp edges. Unlike wood combustion, with fire pit glass there’s no ash, smoke, or soot. And it won’t give off any toxic fumes either. Note: We don’t suggest using fire pit glass with wood.

- No sharp edges
The Bottom Line
With so many pretty colors to choose from, there’s something for everyone in this range. This fire pit glass is really reflective and works great. The colors burn bright and even and there’s no melting or horrible smells emitted.
The only thing that makes this fire glass second in comparison to the Custom Fire Pit Essentials Glass is that some of the glass particles are a little smaller than ½ inch, and may fall through the pit. Wash the glass when you receive it, and you should get rid of any really fine particles in there.
Other than that, the Starfire Glass is a fantastic purchase.

Looking for a fresh and funky way to jazz up your outdoor fire pit? Look no further than this Celestial High Luster Tempered Fire Glass! Available in 14 radiant colors, this fire pit glass is suitable for both natural gas and propane fires.
It also comes delivered in a handy storage jar which makes accessing and pouring the fire glass very easy.
Unlike most fire pit glass, the Celestial brand doesn’t believe in tumbling its glass as it dulls the surface. Instead, it’s put through a gentle shaker that softly vibrates the glass to remove its sharp edges.
Key Points at a Glance
- Available in 14 colors
- Packaged in a jar for easy access
- Non-tumbled
The Bottom Line
Overall the Celestial Fire Glass is not a bad choice. There are plenty of colors to choose from and the quality of them are extremely good. Additionally, because they haven’t been tumbled, they tend to shine quite brightly — more so than some others on the market.
However, quite a bit of the glass is smaller than the advertised size, which is a negative. Also, although they’ve been vibrated to soften the edges, some pieces are still rather sharp. Wash thoroughly before use, and be careful when handling this stuff, and you’ll be fine.

- Great replacement for lava rocks/gas logs
- Tumbled to smooth edges
The Bottom Line
As far as fire pit glass goes, the stuff on offer from Golden Flame isn’t bad. It’s safe to use and there is a range of colors to choose from.
However, the quality is a little lower than expected, especially when compared to the Custom Fire Pit Essentials Glass, and the price is nothing to shout home about either.
Conclusion
