Runner Up: Best Metal Gazebo Kit
With a few missing features compared to the Sojag Messina, but an excellent price point and a great setup, the Sunjoy Chatham metal gazebo kit [Amazon Link] is our runner-up. This 10′ x 12′ metal roof gazebo kit features the all-important steel roof panel system that the Sojag Messina uses. There is no gutter for water, but a gutter system could be installed by a creative homeowner.
The Chatham only comes in one size, but it is quite well made and will last for years.
The assembly is a bit awkward, with the roof assembled on the ground, and then lifted onto the piers (Sunjoy recommends up to 6 people to perform this action!). There are alternative ways of building this unit, which we explore in our full review.
Overall, this is a great unit at an excellent price. For a complete review, please check out our Product Reviews section below.

Budget Pick: Best Hard Top Gazebo Kits
If you don’t need the strength and durability of a steel roof, you may want to check out the Palram Palermo [Amazon Link] [Wayfair Link] line of metal roof gazebo kits.
These units feature a polycarbonate roof system, which is similar to the panels found on polycarbonate greenhouses. The panels are tinted, but let a good deal of light through. Some users may like this, while others may feel it completely defeats the purpose of a gazebo. Depending on your environment, you’ll have to decide if these make sense to you.
They are available in several different size configurations and are backed by a 10-year warranty by Palram. For a complete review, please check out our product reviews area below.

1. Sojag Messina Metal Roof Gazebo [Amazon Link] [Wayfair Link]
The Sojag Messina Hard Top Sun Shelter Gazebo will keep you cool in stately style. This galvanized steel-topped pavilion is modern and elegant, with a deep charcoal tone and clean-lined accents to make everyone feel at home outside.
Sojag makes two versions of these metal gazebo kits, one 10′ x 12′ and one 12′ x 16′ (outside dimensions). The unit shown here is the 10′ x 12′ one. We’ve put together information on Sojag’s sun shelters and gazebos here.
Dimensions
- Length: 10′ or 12′
- Inside Length: 8’4″ or 10’5″
- Width: 12′ or 16′
- Inside Width: 10′ 5″ or 14’5″
- Height: 9’5 to the top of the upper roofline
- Ceiling Height: 6’4 to the outer edge of the roof
- Weight: 288 lbs Note: comes in two boxes.
Assembly and Installation
Assembly of this pavilion takes some time but is not particularly difficult. The pieces are lightweight and easy to move, and with two people working, you should be done in a good day’s work.
You’ll definitely need a good cordless drill and a few spare batteries, as there are 250-300 screws to be installed on these units, most of them 4mm Allen head screws. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as that can damage the unit. If you have a high torque drill with an adjustment, drop it down. Also, remove the protective stickers as you install the pieces, not after it’s all done!
Sojag produced an assembly video to give you a sense of how the whole structure goes together. We don’t suggest you build it inside like they do in this video, and then later try to move it outside!
For installation, the columns of this unit come pre-drilled with three holes each to bolt to the ground. Depending on the medium you are installing to, the general guidelines for installation are:
Installation into Concrete or Wood
If you are drilling into concrete, you may need a hammer drill or at least a masonry bit. We would suggest drilling the holes in the column flange a little bit larger so that larger bolts can be installed. Use Tapcon or similar screws when installing onto concrete.
Installation onto Lawn or Grassy Area
If you plan to install the Messina outdoor gazebo into a lawn or garden space, we suggest pouring footings made of concrete, 4′ deep if you live in an area where the ground freezes.
You’ll need to dig holes 4′ deep and insert Sonotubes into the holes. The tubes are then filled with concrete, and mounting bolts are placed in the concrete while it cures. The metal brackets then slip over the bolts (alternately, you can drill into the footings after they are solid).
This will ensure the Messina sun shelter is stable, and will not go anywhere.
Installation onto Patio Blocks
The Messina prefab gazebo should not be installed onto patio blocks, as they are not strong enough to support the sizable pavilion. Instead, pull up the patio blocks and install concrete footings in a similar manner to the above description. Keep the top of the footings below the patio block grade. Finally, install the patio blocks back around the base legs for a flush look.
The Details
The Messina metal pavilion kit is framed with lightweight but sturdy aluminum and has a galvanized steel roof for protection and style. It is powder coated for long lasting rust resistance and is finished in an attractive charcoal tone.
The Sojag Messina pavilion is very impressive looking and will provide wonderful shelter for virtually any outdoor activity for years to come. Both of the sizes of these units are great, depending on your needs. Most will be comfortable with a 10′ x 12′ metal roof gazebo configuration, but those that need a larger unit to fit larger scale furnishings, or perhaps a hot tub, may opt for the 12′ x 16′ size.
The height on the brim seems just about right at 6’4″. This keeps the sun off of those inside, pretty much regardless of the time of day. Those taller than 6’4 will need to duck under the brim, but once they are underneath, they can stand up as the roof slopes up.
These units have a two-tier roof system, with a screened opening to protect against insect entry. The roof venting system and the overall height of the Sojag Messina makes it a good choice for those looking to put a hard top gazebo over a fire pit or fire table.
The roof opening allows the gazebo to vent and keeps the environment underneath the hard top cover quite comfortable. Sojag has even included a gutter on this system, which will channel the water from the roof down through the legs.
The Sojag Messina pavilion also includes a set of mosquito netting made of nylon, and provides protection from critters, and also protection from the sun and wind. This screen has a zipper for security and velcro tabs to position it in place and is quite functional. If you are looking for protection from the sun and rain, or winter protection, you can get the polyester UV protected sun and rain curtains and the Messina winter curtain from Sojag. The main unit already includes the tracks for these curtains and a second track for the screen curtains.
The Bottom Line: The Best Gazebo Around!
Sojag offers a one year warranty against materials defects and a two-year warranty on the roof panels.
Overall, the Sojag Messina line of metal frame gazebo kits are very high quality, not terribly difficult to assemble, and quite handsome. Sojag has done an excellent job of designing these units, and have thought of everything, from the rain gutters to the insect screens to the installation video. These really are a great choice.

2. Sunjoy 10 x 12 Chatham Steel Hardtop Gazebo [Amazon Link]
No products found. The Sunjoy Chatham 10×12 outdoor steel gazebo is a delight, with a strong roofline and gracefully curved details. Shaded a dark, nearly black, with gold speckled accents, this is a delightful outdoor structure.
The Chatham features a vented two-tier roof system similar to the Sojag Messina, with a steel roof, aluminum frame, and easy assembly.
The Sunjoy Chatham is quite a selection for a metal roof gazebo, though as we mentioned above, there are some shortcomings which we will discuss below.
Dimensions
No products found.- Length: 10’9″
- Length Between Posts: 10’1″
- Width: 12’9″
- Width Between Posts: 12′
- Height: 9’9″
- Ceiling Height: 6’7″
- Post Width: 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″
- Weight: 550lbs
Assembly and Installation
Assembly of the Sunjoy Chatham gazebo hard top is not terribly difficult, though you may want several people (Sunjoy recommends six people!) to help you lift the roof section onto the posts. It is not difficult if you have enough people working on it, and it is complete in a short time, but you should be aware that getting the roof onto the legs is no easy task!
We aren’t huge fans of Sunjoy’s assembly suggestion that six people are needed to lift the roof onto the posts, as many people have a hard time recruiting that much help and scheduling everyone to come. By assembling the roof once the frame is built, you can avoid this issue, but it is not technically how Sunjoy suggests you assemble it. You’ll need tall step ladders to do this, though.
Don’t over-tighten the roof bolts until after the roof is all in place, and then you can make sure everything is secure.
To install this onto the ground, the columns of The Chatham pavilion come pre-drilled with four holes each. Depending on the type of material you plan on using as your base, the general guidelines for installation are:
Installation into Concrete or Wood
To drill into wood, you can just use regular lag bolts or lag screws. If you are drilling into concrete, you may need a hammer drill or at least a good drill with a masonry bit. You’ll need to use Tapcon or similar style screws when installing onto concrete.
Installation onto Lawn or Grassy Area
If you plan to install the Chatham metal gazebo kit on bare earth or lawn, we suggest you pour footings of concrete, 4′ deep if you live in an area where the ground freezes.
You’ll need to dig holes 4′ deep and insert Sonotubes down into the holes. Fill the sonotubes with concrete, and place the mounting bolts in the proper locations in the still-wet cement. The metal brackets then slip over the bolts (you can also drill into the footings after they are solid if that’s easier).
Installation onto Patio Blocks
The Chatham metal gazebo frame cannot be installed on paver blocks; paver blocks are not strong enough to support pre-built gazebo. Instead, lift up the patio blocks and construct concrete footings in a similar manner to the above description. Keep the top of the footings below the grade of the patio blocks. Lastly, replace the patio blocks back around the legs to complete the look.
The Details
The Sunjoy Chatham Steel Topped metal patio gazebo kit is a nice setup and is an especially good deal at its price point. It is partly painted in a powder coated finish, and partly not, which is an odd choice. Still, the finish seems to be pretty strong and resilient to fading and rust. If you see the bare metal starting to peek through, you should cover those areas with Rustoleum paint.
This metal top gazebo kit includes screening that completely encases the pavilion frame, and has a zipper to allow easy entrance and exit. The elastic ties that hold the netting to the posts aren’t great, and you may want to replace them with a different style of tie. There is another curtain rod for waterproof or UV rated curtains, though Sunjoy does not make curtains specifically for this unit.
Unfortunately, there is no gutter system on this gazebo, and if it rains, the water that strikes the roof runs off at the edges of the roof lines. You should also be aware that the roof will not handle large quantities of snow, and heavy snow should be removed if it is accumulating. The good news is that the dark-colored roof helps to melt snow.
There is also no easy channel to run wires from the base up to the top for lighting. You can run them inside, along the posts, and the curtains will hide the wires, though.
A hook has been placed on the top for a fan or light, but it is unclear how much of a weight load the hook can handle. A lightweight fan and some LED lighting are probably fine, but a full sized fan is probably too much.
The Bottom Line: An Outstanding MEtal Top Gazebo
The Sunjoy Chatham steel hardtop is a very nice gazebo at its price point. It looks wonderful once its up, and it has all the most important features needed among metal gazebo kits. There are a few minor issues, like the lack of a gutter, but given the price point the Chatham hits, it is relatively complete.
The package is extremely well wrapped, and you shouldn’t have any problems with pieces being marred during shipment. Sunjoy warranties the Chatham metal gazebo kits to be free from defects for six months. We are pleased to see a warranty, but six months isn’t the best out there.
We don’t love the assembly guidelines, but once you have the Sunjoy Chatham hard top gazebo kit up, it will be a fantastic addition to your outdoor patio space!

3. Palram Palermo 3600 Metal Roof Gazebo [Amazon Link] [Wayfair Link]
The Palran Palermo line of metal patio gazebo kits offers several size and shape configurations, and a simple design that doesn’t make too much of a statement in terms of style. They are very versatile and will go anywhere and with any type of decor.
These hard top gazebo kits are made with an aluminum frame and polycarbonate roof panels, which have some advantages and some disadvantages compared to galvanized steel.
Dimensions
- Length: 10′, 12′, or 14′
- Width: 10′, 12′, or 14′
- Height: 9.75′
- Ceiling Height:
- Weight: 228lbs
Assembly and Installation
You can assemble this unit by yourself, but it is much easier with two people. Typical assembly takes two people a good day. It is not difficult but is time-consuming.
Palram has included an assembly video for aid, and we highly recommend you watch it (or your installers watch it) as it answers many questions.
You may want to spray a little silicone lubricant on the connecting aluminum piece for each of the four side rails. This should reduce the amount of hammering needed to get the pieces together. If you want to try to assemble the unit by yourself, you could consider resting one side of the roof on a 6′ ladder with some 4″x4″ blocking to create a level surface, and put the posts underneath, but it really is easier with two.
You may also want to separate and label all the hardware so that you’re not digging through lots of piles of similar-looking screws. This will make setup a bit quicker.
Installation into Concrete or Wood
You should permanently fix these metal frame gazebo kits to a wooden deck, or concrete patio, with bolts. Drill out the holes in the mounting brackets, and install lag bolts or Tapcon style screws, and you’ll be all set. The Palermo units are rated up to 56 mph of wind.
Installation onto Lawn or Grassy Area
The Palram Palermo kits should be properly anchored to concrete footings if you plan on installing on a lawn or garden area. Pour 4′ deep concrete footings if you live in an area where the ground freezes, and mount the brackets to those footings by drilling into the brackets or embedding them in the still-wet concrete.
Installation onto Patio Blocks
To install in a paver patio area, you should take up the bricks where the posts will sit. You should then pour concrete footings, but leave the top of the footing below the bottom of the surrounding paver blocks. You can then mount the gazebo on the footing, and replace the blocks around the columns for a clean look.
The Details
The Palram Palermo is a decent quality gazebo kit with simple lines and a partially-shaded polycarbonate roof. We wish the posts were square, or larger, or otherwise designed, as the thin round poles are not the right thickness to support the size of the canopy, and the ratio seems off in our eyes.
The Palermo metal gazebo kit comes with a semi-shaded, UV Treated Polycarbonate roof assembly. Depending on the intensity of the sun where you’re located, the shading on these panels may not be enough for your needs, and you may find yourself still quite hot and in significant sun, even underneath the canopy.
However, if you’re in a colder area, this amount of sun can be a nice feature and will help warm you up on those fall days.
The panels also can reflect a great deal of sunlight in a concentrated area, so you should pay attention to where those light beams are going, as you don’t want to blind people or cause car accidents or anything!
The roof is vented and rated to 56 mph winds, so the air flows nicely in this gazebo. Palram thoughtfully included a gutter system to channel rain away from the eaves of the roof, but does not include a screen system. You can find the mosquito netting at Home Depot and the privacy screen at Wayfair.
The Bottom Line: A Decent Aluminum Gazebo
The Palram Palermo line of metal gazebo kits is nice, with many size options to choose from. Given its price point, it is an attractive unit, though you really should consider your external environment before purchasing.
The polycarbonate panels are inferior to steel and can dent in snow and ice. Also, the panels let through a good amount of sun, and if the space underneath the gazebo is uncomfortable, well why have the gazebo in the first place?
Still, Palram offers a 10-year limited warranty with these units, which is a nice feature, and some people may actually like the light infiltration offered on these units. If such a design makes sense in your particular environment, these units are of good quality and will last a while.
Be sure to check the price for these on Wayfair before you buy!

4. Sojag Sedona Metal Top Gazebo Sun Shelter [Amazon Link]
Your outdoor space will be transformed with the addition of the Sojag Sedona hip-roofed pavilion. With its size, simple roof line, and warm dark tones, it will look fantastic in any patio or garden space.
The Sojag Sedona line of metal gazebo kits offers three size configurations, 10′ x 12′ (shown here), 12′ x 16′, and 12′ x 14′. This hard top gazebo has a somewhat similar design to the Sunjoy Chatham, but it does not feature a two-tier roof.
The lack of a two-tier roof helps bring this gazebo to a more modern place, with simpler lines and than some of the other units on our list today.
Dimensions
- Length: 11’10”, 15’2″, or 13’2
- Width: 9’8″, 11’2″, or 11”2″
- Height:9’1
- Ceiling Height: 6’4″
- Number of Boxes: 2
Assembly and Installation
Assembly of the Sedona metal gazebo kits is not terribly difficult, and two people should be able to complete the task in a good day. The roof panel assembly is by far the most difficult part of the assembly, as the polycarbonate roof panels aren’t super easy to get onto the aluminum frame.
Sojag has included a video showing how the assembly works, and we highly recommend you watch it (or you have your builders watch it) prior to assembly, as it answers many questions.
You should plan on installing the frame permanently into your base material, be that material a concrete patio, a wood deck, paver blocks, lawn, etc. The basic idea on how to install the mounting brackets into each of these is shown here.
Installation into Concrete or Wood
To install into a wood deck, simply bolt the unit down with lag bolts going through the three pre-drilled holes in each unit. Installing into concrete is a little more difficult, but a similar task. You may need a hammer drill or at least a good drill with a masonry bit to drill into concrete. Use Tapcon or similar screws when installing the mounting brackets onto concrete.
Installation onto Lawn or Grassy Area
To install the Sedona Hard Top Gazebo kit into a lawn or garden area, we suggest you pour footings of concrete. These should be 4′ deep if you live in an area where the ground freezes.
Dig each hole 4′ deep, and insert a Sonotube down into the hole as a form. Fill the sono tubes with concrete, and place the three mounting bolts in the proper locations in the still-wet concrete mix. The metal brackets then slip over the bolts. If you find it easier to drill into the footings once they are installed, you can do that instead of placing them in the still-wet mix.
Installation onto Patio Blocks
The Sedona gazebo kit should not be installed on concrete patio blocks, as they are too weak to support the unit. You’ll need to put a footing underneath the blocks to support the structure. Pull up the patio blocks around each leg, and construct concrete footings in a similar manner to what is written above. In order to keep everything flush, place the top of the footing low enough that you can place paver blocks on top of it again, for a flush look.
The Details
The Sedona is a great gazebo kit for its price and has a bold look with simple lines and an attractive dark brown finish. This kit has many great features desirable to most buyers, and should definitely be considered.
However, the quality of the build is not as good as the Messina gazebo kit that Sojag makes, due to a few cost-saving items. The primary cost saver is the use of polycarbonate roof panels instead of galvanized steel panels (similar to what is found on a greenhouse). Polycarbonate panels are not as strong as steel and may become damaged or marred by hail, falling ice, etc. Steel is much more resilient, and will likely last much longer.
That said, the polycarbonate does have one advantage: it’s not totally opaque. The 8mm UV tinted panels block out about 75% of the light, but some natural light still filters through, which is a nice feature. The roof on the Sedona is vented, which helps keep the environment cool underneath.
Another cost saving feature the Sedona is missing is the lack of a rain gutter system. The rain just drips off the edge of the Sedona pavilion, which is fine in many cases, but a gutter like the one on the Messina really is a nice extra.
The Sedona gazebo kit includes a complete PVC polyester screen kit, that Velcros to the posts, and has a zipper to allow entry and exit. There are two tracks, so if one wants to install privacy curtains, that is an easy option as well. Sojag included three hooks in the ceiling to hang lights, plants, fans, etc. from, which is definitely helpful.
The Bottom Line
The Sojag Sedona line of metal gazebo kits are very high-quality kits for their price points, and these units will add a splash of style to your outdoor patio set, and some vertical presence and shelter to the garden area.
The polycarbonate roof is fine for those who live in areas that don’t have to deal with a great deal of snow, ice, and hail, and for those who really like the idea of at least some sunlight entering through the roof. If you want your roof to be truly strong, we would suggest you stick with one of the units on our list with a steel roof, as these are much more weatherproof than polycarbonate.
- Dark brown colored rustproof aluminum frame
- 8mm UV protected tinted polycarbonate roof panels
- PVC-coated polyester mosquito netting
- No need to store the roof away for the winter (snow should always be...
- Replacement parts and accessories available ($$$)

5. Sunjoy Wyndham 10 x 12 Galvanized Steel Hardtop Gazebo [Amazon Link]
No products found. The Sunjoy Wyndham metal top gazebo kit has a beautiful architectural design that echoes Arts & Crafts styling and early modern finishes. The look is outstanding and really takes the pavilion/gazebo design in a fascinating direction.
This 10′ x 12′ gazebo comes with a two-tier vented galvanized steel roof (that even works as a sort of skylight!), offering a good deal of strength and resilience to the elements.
The columns are combined with canvas to create a very powerful and attention-getting structure, that gives the Wyndham its signature style. The columns also act to hide any canvas panels, mosquito netting, etc. used.
Dimensions
- Length: 12’6″
- Width: 10’8″
- Height: 10’1″
- Ceiling Height: 6’8
- Weight: 530 lbs
Assembly and Installation
Assembly takes about a full day for two people, and unlike the Sunjoy Chatham gazebo, Sunjoy does not recommend you built this roof on the ground and place it on top later. Consequently, you don’t need 6 people to set the Wyndham up!
Installation into Concrete or Wood
To drill into wood, you can just use regular lag bolts or lag screws. If you are drilling into concrete, you may need a hammer drill or at least a good drill with a masonry bit. Use Tapcon or similar screws when installing onto concrete.
Installation onto Lawn or Grassy Area
The Wyndham gazebo kit includes tent style stakes to install onto a grassy area. However, given the amount of money these metal gazebo kits cost, we would suggest properly anchoring the gazebo to ensure it doesn’t get damaged. We suggest you pour footings of concrete, 4′ deep if you live in an area where the ground freezes.
This task is not terribly difficult, and pretty much just requires some digging. Dig down four feet in the ground for each post, and place a Sonotube in each hole. Fill the tubes with concrete, and place the bolts in the still-wet concrete, in the proper locations. Attach the metal brackets to the bolts. Alternately, you can drill the concrete after it has hardened.
Installation onto Patio Blocks
The Wyndham should not be installed onto brick pavers, as they are not strong enough to support the full weight of this gazebo in windy conditions. Pick up the patio blocks around each leg, and construct concrete footings in a similar manner to the above description. Keep the top of the footings a little bit below the grade of the surrounding patio blocks. Fit the patio blocks back in around the post to complete the patio.
The Details
No products found. The Sunjoy Wyndham gazebo kit has the strongest aesthetic statement of any of the units on our list. It has a very stylish Arts & Crafts vibe, which is very appealing. This unit is virtually guaranteed to look fantastic anywhere it goes, be it a modern backyard, a traditional yard, or any other environment.
The packaging on all of the Sunjoy metal gazebo kits is extremely good, with metal frames surrounding the pieces to ensure that nothing gets damaged in shipping. It’s a nice way to start the process of assembly.
No products found. The roof on the Wyndham is galvanized steel, which is (in our opinion) the best option for a pavilion roof. The steel is louder than plastic in a rainstorm, but the sound can be quite pleasing, and the structural integrity of steel is much more significant. The second tier roof has a ventilation opening to keep air flowing through the gazebo and keep everything cool underneath.
The cloth side panels are actually closer to a dark brown than the beige shown in the above photos, so beware that the unit will look a little different than the pictures when it is delivered. We rather like the lighter brown color, but short of getting custom fabric, there’s not much that can be done there.
The Sunjoy Wyndham includes a mosquito screen netting that surrounds the unit, with a zipper for easy access. The top roof vent also has a Velcro screen to protect against infiltration through the top.
The Bottom Line
The Sunjoy Wyndham is a high-quality metal gazebo kit, with some nice features and a very attractive look.
We feel the aesthetics of the Wyndham gazebo with metal roof are the best of any unit on our list, but the overall feature set has a few lacking items.
Still, the overall quality is quite nice, and this unit will provide stylish shelter for years to come! Like all of the metal top gazebos on our list, these will ship by freight, and you’ll need someone to be home to take delivery.
