There’s something magical and whimsical about trees growing through decks and porches. So often in decks and patio spaces, the focus is on the man-made structures, with nature taking a secondary role. When skilled deck designers allow for existing plant life and trees to grow through decks and porches, it feels like the man made structures take a secondary role to the natural elements. This week’s PatioZen features ten examples of Deck Around Tree designs. If its been real windy and has knocked your tree down get a company to come out after an emergency, to get rid of your tree for you.
PatioZen is a weekly post focused around a unifying topic in the garden and patio space.
1. Trees Bursting Through Modern Deck
Here we have a delightful circular deck of fairly wide plank stained wood, with brick pavers surrounding the wood. In the center of the deck, two beautiful trees burst through the wooden decking for an amazing centerpiece, and for great shading around the small white patio set placed off to the side. Keep in mind though, if you are planning to care fore one of these trees, that a prune at the right time is crucial for them. Be prepared to care for it quite a bit.
2. Building a Deck Around a Tree in a Courtyard
In the center of this courtyard is an enormous tree encrusted with lights. The fact that this tree is essentially centered in the courtyard gives a sense that the entire concept and execution of the structure was arranged around the tree, as opposed to making the tree the afterthought (or just cutting it down to build!). Add a bird feeder or two, and the space will be magical.
This tree appears to provide a great deal of shade to the large outdoor dining table.
3. Tree Lounging By The Pool
Here we have an amazing deck around tree design that blends seamlessly into a pool, which appears to drop off to deep nature beyond! The lovely medium stained decking surrounds a large tree that shades a couple of teak patio furniture pieces looking off into the forest.
Stunning!
4. Trees Through Deck and Through Porch Roof
In this photo the trees are growing not only through the wooden deck, but they jut out through the porch with clever squares cut through the roof line.
It appears that lighting has been installed on the tree trunks, which surely makes this patio space otherworldly in the evening!
5. Tree Growing By Pavilion
Here we have a simple tree surrounded by stones, with a deck gracefully curving around both, and moving to the pool area beyond. A stone cairn and soft top gazebo provide shelter.
This deck appears to not require any unusual framing, as there is a large base of stones surrounding the tree as a buffer.
6. Tree In Patio Court Yard
This image features a tree positioned not in a deck, but rather in a patio with a nice design featuring several different sizes of patio tiles. By creating a defined square space in pleasant harmony with the surrounding tiles, the area around the tree stands out, but blends cleanly with its neighbors. A wind chime making soothing noises would make this space ultra zen.
7. Several Trees By The Pool
In this patio and pool area, several trees reach through a beautiful geometric deck space. Rectangular and square blocks punctuate the trees, and the deck has some interesting rectangular cut outs that allow other bushes and plants to take center stage.
This is a wonderful design, and surely gives a good deal of shelter to the patio table in the center.
8. Tree With Surrounding Bench
Here a tree is surrounded by an unusual heptagonal bench, with the base decking also mimicking the heptagonal design throughout! The tree takes center stage, with plenty of seating area around it, and additional patio furniture thoughtfully placed to create multiple conversation areas.
9. Deck Around Tree In Gorgeous Outdoor Room
This jaw-dropping outdoor room places the trees in the center, and builds the deck around trees to incredible effect. With lighting below, and a lantern hung from a tree branch, the tree becomes the focal point for the patio sectional seating area.
10. Narrow Court Yard With Solitary Tree
Lastly, we have a minimalist solitary tree growing in a quiet internal courtyard. This ultra-modern courtyard with white and black walls surrounding it, is serene and beautiful. Featuring three accent lights growing around the base of the tree, and two stories of glass walls looking out on the patio space, the simplicity and elegance of this courtyard is unsurpassed.

my husband built a 12×12 deck around my favorite tree for the two of us back in the very back corner of our backyard. i stained it a gray color, got a round rug that has kind of a red color, and got a little conversation set with a round table and two egg like chairs, but we have our plain old 6 foot privacy fence behind it. the decks you’ve posted here are beautiful and i love the style, would you have any ideas of what to do with the fence behind the deck? i would be so unbelievably grateful for the help. thank you!
