Polywood’s Chippendale Outdoor Dining Set only seats six, and has a more muted, transitional design than the loud and proud modernism of the Trex Surf City patio dining set. Made in the USA of high quality recycled HDPE plastic wood, this set is covered under an impressive 20 year warranty.

The Chippendale set is extremely high quality, but sits at a price point that is a little bit too high for what is offered, in our minds. However, if you love the style and can handle the price, this set is an outstanding choice for a 7 piece outdoor dining set, especially for those that don’t want to go ultra modern.

Runner Up Best Budget Composite Wood Dining Set

Sleek, modern, stylish, and creative, the UrbanFurnishings extendable patio dining set is a great choice for those looking for a fully featured poly wood dining set but don’t want to break the bank, and who can live with a few minor issues.

This outdoor dining set is capable of seating up to eight people, though the table legs are positioned such that when fully occupied, dinner guests will be hitting their knees against the table legs.

The table features a cool hide away extension leaf system in the center, but when it is hidden, users will be bumping their knees against the underside of the leaf. Also, the arms of the chairs cannot be pushed fully under the table, though the chairs stack quite nicely for storage.

That said, the overall the aesthetics of this 9 piece patio dining set are outstanding, and there are a lot of great features here. The Details

This set is made with an aluminum frame, which should be rust-free if taken care of. The wood slats are Trex poly resin, and are weatherproof, UV-resistant, and rot-proof. There is essentially no maintenance required with this table, though we do suggest covering it to keep it clean when not in use.

This set will get a little bit toasty in the sun, if left exposed to direct sun for a while. The darker color palettes especially will heat up, so beware if you are going to be in direct sun frequently.

Table

The table of this set is simple, modern, and elegant, with no excess design elements or unnecessary flourishes.  It does not expand, which for many is a negative, but that also means that there is ample leg room underneath. You can even cross your legs under the table for comfort, which is always a nice attribute.

There is no umbrella hole for this table, so if you want to shade it, you won’t be able to use a patio umbrella. Your best bet is probably a cantilever umbrella, which would surely look fantastic with this table set!

Chairs

The two arm chairs included in this set are very simple, with contemporary curves and modern finishes. Virtually all of the areas the body is in contact with are made of poly wood, and the chair is slightly contoured to increase comfort over time.

These arm chairs fit nicely under the table when not in use.

No cushions or pillows are included in this set, and you may want to consider at least a seat cushion for longer term comfort.

Benches

Three people can fit on each of the benches without too much difficulty, though there may be some bumping of elbows from time to time.

The benches tuck under the table when not in use, which is a great feature. This makes the overall footprint of the table surprisingly small when not in use, giving more room for other activities in the same space!

Assembly

Assembly of the Trex Surf City set is pretty simple if you have a nut driver or nut end on a power drill. The chairs are pre-assembled, and the table and bench legs need to be installed on the tops, which isn’t terribly difficult.

The Bottom Line

The clean lines and modern sensibilities of the Trex Surf City set, coupled with the durability of polywood construction, makes this a great outdoor dining set option. We also really like that you can buy individual chairs and benches in this line, so you can configure the patio furniture decor completely according to your needs.

The Trex table and chair set is covered under a 20 year warranty, which is an extremely nice feature. Trex is perhaps the most well known name in HDPE products, so you are paying for the brand at least somewhat with this patio dining set. That said, this is one of the finest polywood patio dining sets available!

The Details

This set includes the Nautical table and Chippendale chairs. These units are all quite heavy, and there is no risk of the wind blowing them over. These dining sets are Made in the USA, and are top of the line.

The whole set is made of environmentally-friendly polywood, even the table frame and legs, which means they are heavy, and sturdy. The whole thing can easily be power-washed to clean off, and there’s no risk of rust, rot, or UV degradation with these sets.

Table

The Nautical table is constructed essentially entirely out of poly wood, including the legs. The legs are made with an open frame design that is a bit awkward, and means that when knees and legs will be in contact with the table legs.

The table offers an optional umbrella hole for easy use of a patio umbrella through the center of the table. Should you decide you want to use a different shade system, you can plug the hole back up and it will not be immediately visible.

Chairs

The chairs in this set are the Polywood Chippendale chairs. They are quite comfortable, with a graceful contour to support the back, and some interesting design elements throughout that bring visual interest to these chairs.

They do not include any cushions, and we would suggest you pick up some cushions at least for the seat (as shown in the top photo). The cushions really make the set look warmer, and takes emphasis off the table legs.

Assembly

Assembly of this dining set is pretty simple, though it does take a bit of time to get these units together. The chair arms need to attach to the chair seat, and the table legs need to be secured to the table top.

The Polywood Chippendale garden dining set is certainly not the cheapest on our list, but it is quite robustly Made in the USA, with no visible metal frame, and with colored stainless steel hardware. There is no way this set will rust! Polywood backs their dining sets with a 20 year warranty, which is a great feature and gives comfort that this set really will last a lifetime.

This 6 piece dining patio set is not the cheapest on our list, but it is extremely high quality, and will look fantastic in many environments for years to come!

The Details

The UrbanFurnishings poly wood dining table is a beautiful modern dining set that can be left out in the elements without risk of rot, rust, fading, or damage (though we still recommend covering the table when not in use to keep it clean!)

This patio set is available in two colors: a warm cedar brown tone (shown here) and a beautiful silver gray. The silver gray is also quite modern, and compliments the powder coated aluminum very nicely.

The chairs are wide enough that having 8 people at the table gets pretty tight. 6 is quite comfortable, and 8 works in a pinch (especially if there are a few little ones to squeeze in a bit!), but beware that four people will have to straddle a table leg when the table is fully occupied.

The eco wood on this dining set can get a little bit hot, if it is in direct sun, but they generally don’t get extremely hot, and for the most part the body doesn’t touch the metal at all.

A few owners have reported some of the polywood slats bowing, especially on the leaf of the table. If this occurs on your table, we recommend you contact UrbanFurnishing as quickly as possible for replacement slats.

The Table

This set is quite eco-friendly, and is made with recycled wood pulp and poly resin for a long lasting outdoor finish. The design is stylish and clever, with a hidden leaf in the middle of the table, that sits underneath the table when not in use.

The table needs to be pulled apart to open the extension, which is not the easiest task to accomplish, and some buyers may find the work to be annoying. Still, the clever storage system for the leaf means that there’s no need to worry about finding a place for the leaf when the table is not expanded.

When the leaf is sitting under the table, the chairs cannot be pushed under one side of the table, which may bother some users.

Due to the design of this table, the extension leaf is in the center. Consequently, there is no available hole for a patio umbrella to be inserted into this table. If you want a shade for the UrbanFurnishings poly wood dining set, you’ll need to go unconventional, and use perhaps a cantilever umbrella or a sun shade sail to shade the furniture.

The Chairs

The chairs on this 9 pc set are stackable for storage, which is great! Aluminum can be a light weight material for outdoor furniture, and being able to stack the furniture for easy storage and additional weight is a great feature. All of the chairs offer arms for comfort, and each arm is constructed of a steel band with a piece of poly wood placed on top.

The chairs are comfortable enough, though you may want to consider getting some cushions for them, at least for the seats.

Assembly

There is very little assembly required for this patio dining set. Essentially all that is required is for you to screw the table legs onto the table frame using a Philips screwdriver. The chairs come pre-assembled, as does the table top. Once you have the legs on, get a friend to help you stand the table up, and you’re good to go!

The Bottom Line

The UrbanFurnishing poly wood table and chair outdoor dining set is a very nice set at an attractive price point. The lack of any significant assembly, interesting extension design, and overall aesthetics make this patio dining set a great option for those looking for a large extendable dining table. As long as you don’t mind a few people needing to straddle table legs when the table is fully occupied, this is an excellent patio dining set.

The fasteners are made of stainless steel, and will not rust when left out in the weather. This patio table and chair set is made to withstand pretty much any kind of weather, though we recommend covering it when not in use.

Table

The table features a pretty simple design, with square inset legs that look quite nice, but may cause discomfort when many people are sitting at the table (some guests will need to straddle the table legs).

The Ivy Terrace table does not offer an umbrella hole, so if you intend to shade this, you’ll have to get creative with an awning, hard top gazebo, etc.

This table does not offer any expansion opportunities, which is unfortunate. However, all of the chairs fit under the table, and the lack of a leaf sitting beneath the table means that there is a good deal of legroom underneath, which is always a plus.

The wood-like polystyrene is attractive and elegant, with wide boards and nice coloration (the color penetrates through the wood.)

The Ivy Terrace Basics set comes with two types of chairs: two arm chairs, and four side chairs. They are slightly different sizes (see the dimensions above) but all are comfortable, and feature contoured backs and seats.

These units do not include cushions, and we encourage you to consider at least getting seat cushions for additional comfort.

Assembly

No assembly is required with this unit! If you hate to assemble furniture, this set is for you. Simply unload the boxes, unpack the chairs, and get everything in place. You’ll be relaxing in no time.

The Details

All of the Polywood table and chair pieces are constructed in the USA of recycled, eco-friendly HDPE materials. These materials are among the highest quality available and will last for years.

All of the fasteners are made of color-matched marine grade stainless steel and blend in nicely with the furniture so that you don’t even see the fasteners. All is very well designed here, and this set is an excellent overall dining set.

The polywood material is easily cleaned and can be hit with a power washer every so often. The material is essentially maintenance free other than minor cleanings, though we do encourage you to keep the table covered to prevent dirt and pollen build up on the table.

Table

Like in the Chippendale set, the Traditional Garden dining set includes the Nautical table as its centerpiece. This unit features an all-polywood design, with no metal frame to speak of.

The legs are constructed in an open design that is reasonably compact but may cause some issues if several people are sitting at the table at the same time.

There is no extension or expansion system available for this table, but it is a pretty comfortable size. The corners are gently rounded so that those seated near the edges won’t have sharp corners to deal with.

The Nautical table has a hole for a patio umbrella to be inserted through the center, and an optional plug should you decide you want to use a different shading mechanism, or have this table in an enclosed area.

Chairs

The Polywood Traditional Garden outdoor dining set includes the Traditional Garden chairs. This set comes with four side chairs, and two arm chairs, all of which feature contoured backs and seats for added comfort.

 

These chairs do not feature any cushions, and we suggest that you pick up at least some seat cushions for the chairs, for added long-term comfort.

Assembly

Assembly of the Traditional Garden dining set is not difficult, though a few steps are involved. The chair arms get attached to the chair seat, and the table legs must be secured to the table top.

We marginally like the design of the Chippendale chairs a bit more, as they are a little more unique looking, but both sets are quite comfortable and extremely elegant looking.
