Snow Joe Snow Blower Reviews
Snow Joe, and its companion-brand Sun Joe, makes many outstanding outdoor products. From snow blowers to mulchers to pressure washers, Joe consistently puts out great products, and is one of our favorite snow blower brands! Their snow blowers are of particular interest to us, as they are high quality and very convenient — especially their battery-operated models. This article looks at a wide cross-section of Snow Joe’s snow removal product line and does several Snow Joe Snow Blower Reviews.
Our goal is to help buyers find the right model for their needs, requirements, and budget.
Those who live in relatively-mild spots like Maryland and Oregon have different snow removal needs than those who live in Maine or Wisconsin, and your snow blower (or snow blowers!) should reflect those needs. So consider your needs in a snowblower, and read on to find the perfect model for your environment!
In this article, we’ll start with some buyer’s tips to identify important aspects of various snow blowers, and then we’ll move onto individual Snow Joe Product Reviews.
Snowblower Buyer’s Tips
There are a few key things you’ll want to look for when shopping for a snow blower. Below are a few important considerations to keep in mind.
Snow Removal Area
The first task is to consider the area you need to remove snow from. For most, this will be a driveway, a front walk, and perhaps a sidewalk. Consider the dimensions of all of these areas, and keep in mind that for heavy snowfalls, many of these areas will need to be cleaned with multiple passes of the snow blower.
Your Weather and Snow Removal Environment
Those who live in areas with lots of heavy, wet snow often have the most difficulty dealing with snow removal. Light snow, even if you get a lot of it, isn’t as difficult to deal with as heavy, wet snow.
Additionally, heavy, wet snow often tends to knock down power lines, which can present significant problems for those who intend to use an electric snow blower for snow removal!
The more wet, heavy snow you get, the more likely you’ll want to move toward a gas-powered model, and away from an electric model.
Corded vs. Cordless Models
One of the most important things to consider in your search for a Snow Joe snow blower is whether you want a corded or cordless model. The general rule is that the larger the area you need to clear, the more likely you’ll want to use a corded model, but there are a few factors to consider.
Corded Snow Blowers
Corded models are almost always more powerful than cordless models, and will likely remove snow faster than a cordless one.
However, dealing with a cord is always a nuisance, and is much less convenient than running off batteries!
Cords are constantly being unplugged, extension cords are a pain, and the cord can get tangled in the augers, which can be quite dangerous. As North Dakota State University says, “if the electric cord becomes caught in the machine and is severed, severe shock or electrocution can result.” Be careful!
Extension Cords
If your driveway and walkways are long, you’ll almost certainly need an extension cord. Be sure you get a robust outdoor-rated, high amperage extension cord. Check the individual amperage of your unit, but in general, an extension cord like this one from Southwire.

Cordless Snow Blowers
Cordless models typically don’t always have the same power levels as corded models and do need to have fully charged batteries in order to run well. They tend to run much quieter than corded or gas-powered models, and can be easy to move around due to not being tethered to anything!
They tend to be more expensive than cordless models, and extra batteries are often on the pricey side as well.
Additionally, the larger cordless models require two batteries to be used at once to power the snow blower, so plan accordingly. These batteries are pretty expensive, and you should be careful to follow the instructions for maintenance and use. Be sure to charge them inside, not in an unheated garage. And store them in a warm place, as well.
Unfortunately, you can’t typically plug in a battery powered snow blower when the batteries die; you have to wait for them to recharge.
Power Outages and Electric Snowblowers
If you’re in an area that is prone to power outages when it snows, a corded model is unlikely to be much help to you unless you have a generator. With no power to your house, your snow blower won’t do anything at all!
However, a cordless model may be a good choice, especially if you pick up a spare battery or two to ensure that you have enough power to remove the snow that you need to remove.
Alternately, it’s best to stick with a gas-powered unit and ensure that you have enough gas on hand to run the snow blower.
Snow Removal Power
Another good thing to consider in a snow blower model is how much snow it can remove per minute. Smaller machines will remove only a few pounds, while larger and more powerful ones can remove huge amounts of snow in a snap.
If you’re looking to invest in a machine that can help you remove snow from a sidewalk or similar area, around 30 pounds per minute would be ideal.
However, if you need to remove quite a bit of snow, like from a large driveway, you’ll want to look at something more powerful, like a few hundred pounds per minute.
It’s important to consider this aspect as it is what will determine how fast your snow blower works to help remove snow, and how long you’ll be out there in the cold, working.
Very Heavy, Wet Snow
Particularly heavy, wet snow will not get blown very far by any electric snowblower. Bottom line. That really difficult snow at the end of the driveway that the plow pushed in? You know, the salty, super-thick stuff? You’ll only blow that a few feet, max, and you may find it easier to simply shovel that portion out yourself.
Managing Stuck Snow and Ice in the chutes
If you find that ice and snow keep clogging in your snow blower, you may want to spray everything down with a Teflon snow and ice repellent. This will help the snow and ice slide easily through the chute and will make your whole snowblower system work better.
It is always wise to keep a can of this stuff on hand for if you find your snow blower clogging too much.

Nighttime Illumination
While not necessarily a vital feature, a built-in snow blower light is always good to have on hand. The light will help you to better see the pathway you’re trying to clear with your snow blower and can allow you to remove snow during the night or in poorly lit conditions.
Most of the power shovels and small snow throwers don’t include a light, but some of the larger models do.
Snowblower Weight and Maneuverability
You should always check the overall weight of a snow blower. Ideally, these machines should be easy for you to move around, so you can remove snow in all the areas you need to hit.
However, they can be a bit bulky, especially if they’re designed to remove a large amount of snow quickly. This can make guiding them around difficult.
If you have several different areas to deal with, and different levels, you may want to consider investing in multiple snow blowers, perhaps one for the back deck, and another for the driveway or walkways.
Number of Stages on the Snow Blower
Most power shovels and electric snow throwers are only single stage models, meaning they have one auger that spits out snow. Larger units will often have two or more stages, which make snow removal much easier and more effective. A second auger shoots the snow out of the chute, which can almost always be directed to various angles to keep blown-snow organized.
Two-stage snow blowers are almost always more expensive than single-stage models and are almost always more powerful. The larger the area you need to clear, the more likely you are to want a two-stage model.
How Far the Chute Can Throw Snow
The last thing to really check for in a snow blower is how far the chute can throw snow. Almost every machine has a chute which has one purpose: to blow the snow away from you. Depending on your needs, you can look for a chute that can throw snow anywhere from 20 ft. away to 35 ft. away.
It’s important to check this to make sure that the snow blower doesn’t just move piles of snow to an area you need to move around in.
Snow Joe Warranty and Customer Service
For those who have had problems with their snow blowers, Snow Joe has been outstanding in the customer service area. They will quickly send out replacement parts or even send out a whole new snow blower if yours simply isn’t working correctly.
Even for those who have felt the performance of their snowblower hasn’t been as good as it should be, virtually everyone who interacts with the company reports excellent customer service.
Snow Joe warranties all of their snow blowers, generally for 2 years (check your individual unit to confirm, but every one we’ve seen has had a two-year guarantee), and will replace it if there are issues with your unit.
Snow Joe Snow Blower Reviews
Winter can be a quiet time of the year, but it also brings very harsh weather. Wind, frigid temperature, and sleet are some of the most common problems. And digging out heavy snowfalls is tiring, hard work, and can be dangerous or fatal.
A Snow Joe snowblower can greatly ease the challenge of cleaning up after a storm, and Snow Joe has a variety of models that are useful for different scales and tasks. Here we will start with a comparison table to get oriented, and then look in depth at several models from across the spectrum of their offerings.

- It runs on a 13 amp motor.
- It has an instant start battery on the front.
- It is built with two blades.
- The front features an adjustable chute.
- The chute can throw snow up to 20 ft. away.
- There is a safety switch feature.
- It can remove 550 lbs. of snow per minute.
- Covered under a 2-year warranty
Dimensions
- It measures 39.8 x 19.5 x 38.6 inches.
- It can create a pathway that measures 18 x 8 inches.
- It measures 26 lbs.
The Details
The Snow Joe Ultra SJ618E Electric Snow Thrower is a medium-duty plugin snow blower that’s pretty easy to work with, and will move a good deal of snow at a budget price point.
Build Quality and Use
The Ultra SJ618E plugs in, and is powered by a single-stage engine. This medium-powered snow thrower works with two plastic auger blades, both of which are cold-resistant but are clearly inferior to those models that feature metal augers.
This snow blower can remove up to 550 lbs. of snow per minute, which is pretty decent given its price point. The snow will then travel through the chute, which has an adjustable feature and throws it 20 ft. away.
Of course, heavy, wet snow will travel a much shorter distance and is a significant challenge with this snow blower. If you’ve got a wet snow, be sure to plow it every 3″ or so to ensure the snow blower will handle the heavy snow.
The front of this snow blower has an instant-start button, so there’s no time spent pulling starter cords and struggling to get the engine going.
It also has a unique safety switch feature which will automatically turn the machine off if it gets caught in something or doesn’t detect snow in an area.
The front handle is foldable so you can easily store it away in a snowblower storage shed or garage without worries that it will take up much space.
Extension Cords
As this model is a plug-in electric snow blower, you don’t need to worry about charging batteries or otherwise mangaing battery swapping. However, you do need to worry about extension cords. Be sure that the extension cord you use with this snow blower is capable of handling the power load, and is rated for wet outdoor use.
This Coleman extension cord should do well.

What Does This Snow Blower Excel At?
If you don’t need a huge amount of snow removal power, and you’re working in a place where running extension cords is not particularly difficult, the Ultra SJ618 is an excellent choice. It’s quite inexpensive and will move snow up to 6″ deep, though it struggles in wet snow, as mentioned before.
And the price point it hits is excellent, so if you’re on a budget and don’t need a giant two-stage unit, this is a great choice.
The Bottom Line
The Snow Joe Ultra SJ618 electric snow blower comes with a variety of helpful features, like an instant start button and large chute, and does a good job dealing with medium-sized snow falls.
It’s clearly on the budget end, with a less robust build quality than the other models on our list, and a corded design that is more cumbersome than the cordless models on our list, but buyers on a budget should focus on this snow blower.
It’s covered under the same 2-year warranty as the rest of Snow Joe’s equipment, and is a great choice.

2. Snow Joe Ultra SJ623E 18-Inch 15-Amp Electric Snow Thrower
Key Points at a Glance
- It is a corded model.
- It runs on 15 amps.
- There is a large built-in light in the front.
- It has an adjustable 180-degree chute on the front.
- It can remove up to 720 lbs. of snow per minute.
- It’s constructed out of a heavy-duty steel.
- There are wheels on the bottom.
- Covered under a 2-year warranty
Dimensions
- It measures 45 x 19 x 38 inches.
- It weighs 34 lbs.
- The snow blower can clear an 18 x 10 inch pathway.
The Details
The Snow Joe Ultra SJ623E is a solid snow thrower, with a great deal of power, and a nice balance between weight and snow-moving capacity. It’s not a light-weight power shovel, nor is it a heavy two-stage snow blower.
It hits a nice in-between spot, balancing ease of use with power.
Build Quality and Use
The Ultra SJ623E Snow Blower is a heavy-duty model, constructed out of a durable steel, and is quite robust. It has steel augers, which is a nice step up from the plastic augers on some of the smaller models.
It can withstand quite a bit of the harsh elements as well as typical wear and tear. This model runs on 15 amps and features wheels on the bottom so you can easily glide it around without problems.
The four blade rotors inside can quickly pick up snow (up to 720 lbs. per minute) and throw it through its adjustable chute up to 25 ft. away (for light snow). The snow blower is good for medium to large areas and can create an 18 x 10 pathway on each trip, though it is not self-propelled.
There is also a large built-in light on the front to help you better see where you are going with it.
Extension Cords
As this snow blower is not battery powered, you won’t need to worry about juggling batteries. However, you will likely have to deal with extension cords, assuming your driveway or sidewalks have any significant length. Be sure you use an appropriate outdoor-rated, high-amperage extension cord with this snow blower.

What Does This Snow Blower Excel At?
The Ultra SJ623E is a really great snow blower for those who are looking for a single stage unit that is not battery powered. It is quite powerful and can move a great 720lbs of snow per minute. It can throw light snow 20-25′ away but will struggle with significant amounts of heavy, wet snow.
If you’re looking for a heavy duty corded model, this is a good choice. If you’re getting large amounts of heavy, wet snow, you’ll probably want to do a pass every 3-4″ of wet snow, as this unit will struggle with over 4″ of heavy snow.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a powerful and gas-free snow blower to use in your yard, definitely check this one out. It’s not only affordable but can clear out a large area of snow quickly.
Just understand its limitations, and be prepared to go out multiple for multiple snow blowing sessions if you are inundated with heavy, wet snow.

3. Snow Joe iON13SS 40-volt Cordless Snow Shovel
Key Points at a Glance
- It’s an affordable model with plastic blades.
- It’s compact.
- There are two handles on the shovel.
- It’s cord-free.
- It uses a 40-volt rechargeable battery.
- It has a two blade paddle auger.
- It can throw snow 25 ft. away.
- It can remove up to 300 lbs. of snow per minute.
- Features a 2-year warranty
Dimensions
- It measures 12.6 x 11 x 54.3 inches.
- It can carve a pathway out that measures 13 x 6 inches.
- It weighs 12 lbs.
The Details
The Snow Joe iON13SS Snow Shovel most closely resembles a traditional snow shovel in size and scale and is probably best compared to a typical snow shovel in terms of its power. It really is a great unit for small snow-removal projects, and is the best electric snow shovel around.
This unit is super light and compact, and can easily be lifted with one hand. It works like an electric shovel, pushing snow directly in front of it with no cords to worry about. Grab it and move it anywhere with ease!
Build Quality and Use
The handle features two grip points, one in the back and one in the front, which you can grasp onto to help guide the shovel around.
The iON13SS is powered by a 40-volt rechargeable battery and can remove up to 300 lbs. of snow per minute. The 13SS is powerful enough to throw the snow 25 ft. away, but the angle cannot be controlled.
This cord-free machine uses two blade plastic paddle augers to clear the snow, which is not as robust as the steel blades present on the larger Snow Joe models. This power shovel is ideal to use in small areas, like steps, decks, walkways, etc. but is probably too small for driveways. You may find holding this snow blower to be strenuous, due to the handle design.
Battery Power and Management
Like all battery powered cordless models, you’ll need to pay close attention to battery management to ensure you’ve got enough juice to complete your snow plow task.
The battery lasts quite a while on this unit, but if you find you use it a lot, you’ll want to pick up a spare so that you can charge one while you use the other.
No products found.
What Does This Model Excel At?
The iON13SS is ideal for small tasks and small areas that are inconvenient for a large snow blower to get to. Perhaps you have small porches, decks, and inaccessible areas that you want to clean. The iON13SS is perfect for these spots.
Don’t expect to clean your driveway with this one (unless it’s a small driveway!) but it’s hard to beat the convenience and mobility of this electric snow shovel.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for an affordable and compact model to use in small areas around your home, this model is perfect to consider. It’s cord-free and can remove quite a bit of snow for its small size.
- [VERSATILE]: Ideal for quick, easy and CORD-FREE snow pickups on decks,...

4. Snow Joe iON18SB Ion Cordless Single Stage Brushless Snow Blower
Key Points at a Glance
- It’s a cordless option.
- It has a single-stage brushless motor.
- It runs on 40 volts.
- It runs on a single rechargeable battery.
- There is a 3 watt light on the side.
- Some quick assembly is required.
- It’s lightweight.
- Guaranteed for Two Years.
Dimensions
- It measures 43.3 x 20.5 x 37.4 inches.
- It weighs about 32 lbs.
- The pathway it clears measures 18 x 8 inches.
The Details
The Snow Joe iON18SB snow blower model runs on a single battery, and does a good job moving light to medium snowfall. When on, the blower runs quietly and is easy to move around — you won’t have to exert much energy when doing so.
It’s also cordless so you won’t have to worry about a cord getting in your way. Awesome!
Build Quality and Use
When gliding the snow blower over the snow, it will use its strong two rubber blades to help lift it up quickly and release it through its 180-degree auto-rotate chute at the top which will blow it about 20 ft. away. Of course, if the snow is heavy and wet, it will struggle much more to move, and will only blow the snow a few feet away.
The blades are heavy-duty, and can remove almost 500 lbs. of snow per minute. This snow blower is pretty efficient, and can clear a surprising amount of snow in one pass.
In addition to this, there is a small 3 watt light on the side of the snow blower which you can use to help you better see where you are going during the night or in poorly-lit conditions.
Battery Management
As the iON18SB is a single stage snow blower, and is not as powerful as the two-stage models, you’ll only need a single battery to run it. You should probably pick up a second battery to swap out if your area is prone to heavy, prolonged snowfalls.
This model can run for up to 50 minutes on a full battery.
You wll almost certianly want to pick up a spare battery, so you can charge one while you use the other.
No products found.
What Does This Snow Blower Excel At?
If you regularly get large amounts of heavy, wet snow, and need to move a lot of it, the iON18SB is almost certainly not for you. Get a two stage model, or move onto a gas snow blower.
But this model will do a great job moving a decent sized area of say 8″-10″ of snow that isn’t super wet. If that’s your environment, this unit is a great choice. It’s so light you can pick it up with one hand. Try that with a Toro or Yardmax!
The Bottom Line
The Snow Joe iON18SB Snow Blower is a heavy-duty machine that works quickly to help remove snow. It’s lightweight and comes with great features, like a small light and a rechargeable battery.
Keep in mind it’s a bit pricey, so if you’re not looking to make a large investment, it’s probably a good idea to look elsewhere.

5. Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Cordless Self-Propelled Two-Stage 3-Speed + Reverse Snow Blower
Key Points at a Glance
- It runs on 5.0 Ah.
- It uses two 40 volt rechargeable batteries to run (both a the same time).
- It is a cordless model.
- It has three speeds and two stages to choose from, and is self-propelled.
- There are two lights built into the front.
- It has a control panel you can use to guide the machine.
- It can remove up to 1,000 lbs. of snow per minute.
- The chute can throw snow up to 32 ft.
- Covered under a 2-year warranty
Dimensions
- It measures 47 x 25.7 x 40 inches.
- It weighs 99 lbs.
- It can create a 24 x 13 inch pathway.
The Details
The Snow Joe iON24SB-XR Snow Blower model is a powerful machine that runs on 5.0 Ah with two 40 volt rechargeable batteries. It can remove up to 1,000 lbs. of snow per minute and throw it 32 ft. away with its chute, making snow removal a snap!
When driving it over a path, the snow blower will make a 24 x 13-inch pathway, which you can easily see with the two lights built into the front.
This model has two stages and three speeds you can use and adjust with the control panel built into the front. You can use this panel to change the direction of the steel augers, including a reverse setting. You can also adjust the height of the snow blower, depending on if you’re using it on gravel, concrete, asphalt, etc.
General Build Quality and Design
Some users have found that the handles are pretty uncomfortable in the way you need to hold the grips from the bottom — pulling up rather than pushing down. Most snow blowers push down to engage, using the weight of your hand to make it easy.
That said, there are certainly those who prefer this design, as you’re not pushing down on the snowblower, adjusting the angle artificially.
There are some plastic parts on this snow blower, which may lead to issues with breakage down the line. However, there is a general trade-off when comparing a battery powered snow blower to a gas powered snow blower — electric engines require much less maintenance than gas ones do, which is obviously a plus.
Battery Power and Management
The iON24SB-XR runs quietly and can work for up to 40 minutes on a full battery power. As the batteries decline in power, it will throw snow less far. Note that this unit requires two batteries to be used at the same time in order to run, and includes a dual charger to charge both at the same time.
As with the Snow Joe iON8024-XR snow blower reviewed below, this snow blower comes with two iBAT40XR batteries, which last for about 30-45 minutes per charge. It takes about 2-3 hours to charge up these batteries, so be sure you manage your battery capacity when dealing with heavy, prolonged snowstorms.
Optionally, you can pick up a higher capacity batteries — the iBAT40XR-P — which will last up to 65 minutes on a single charge, though the cost is obviously extra. You’ll need two of these in order to get a significant benefit from them.
No products found.
Packaging and Moving Concerns
This machine is quite heavy to move and can be difficult to move around your environment. It’s apparently also difficult to ship and deliver, as well! One concern many have voiced with this snow blower is with the packaging. It’s not packed super well, and this unit is heavy.
Many have received their units damaged due to poor packaging and significant weight, and it’s best to make sure your snow blower is fully functional when you receive it — don’t wait for the snow to fly!
What Does This Snow Blower Excel At?
When the heavy, wet snow comes flying, this unit will move it! Assuming it is working properly, the iON24SB-XR will move large amounts of snow, even stuff that’s pretty heavy and wet. If you’ve got a large area to plow and don’t want to deal with a corded model, this unit is certainly worth considering.
It’s a great option for those who are looking for a two-stage, battery-operated snow blower, and who like having the trigger handles on the bottom, as opposed to the top.
The Bottom Line
The Snow Joe iON24SB-XR is a powerful snowblower. However, if you’re looking for a two-stage model, we would suggest stretching for the iON8024-XR discussed below.
This model is good, but many have reported issues with the iON24SB-XR, from augers ceasing to turn to damage from poor packaging. The iON8024-XR is essentially a slightly larger, improved design on this model with better hand grips.
And while it is a bit more expensive, it’s generally worth the step up in price.

6. Snow Joe iON8024-XR 24-Inch Cordless Two-Stage Snow Blower

- It has an 80V brushless motor
- It is battery powered with zero carbon emissions.
- Controlled by a push button illuminated LED display.
- Features a quiet motor.
- It has reversible skid shoes.

- It can clear a path 24″ width and 13″ deep of snow.

- Snow can be expelled up to 30 feet.
- Warranty – 2 years.
Dimensions and Specs
- Weight 105.8 lbs.
- Height 40 inches.
The Details
The Snow Joe iON 8024-XR is the grizzly bear of the Snow Joe snow blower lineup. This cordless model is quite powerful, capable of moving up to 1,000 lbs of snow per minute, operating off of battery power. Sweet! The 8024-XR is a two-stage snow blower with some cool digital features and controls.
Snow Joe is continuously improving and tweaking their designs, and the 8024-XR is a solid step forward among cordless snow blowers.
It is not as powerful as a two-stage gas powered snow blower, but it will move all the snow you’ve got, as long as you stick with it and manage your battery power properly. It has a transport gear that allows you to move the snowblower without engaging it (to, say, drive it to your neighbor’s house).
And perhaps the biggest improvement to the design is the location of the handles. They the handles to engage the snow blower are positioned on top, and the unit works by pressing down rather than squeezing up. This is much easier on the hands.
Controlling the Snow Blower
The 8024-XR snow blower has adjustable skid shoes on the body, which enable users to raise it up and down so you can use the snow blower on decking, gravel, or most any other material.
The rotation of the chute is controlled by an electric system, which sounds really cool, but doesn’t work as well as a manual control would. The buttons can freeze up, making the chute immobile. Often, users find they need to take off gloves and really press the button hard to engage it.
The old-style crack adjustment is superior and doesn’t use up any precious battery power.
We hope Snow Joe fixes this on their next model.
Battery Management
This unit can move a significant amount of snow with ease, but its batteries only last about 30 minutes when running on full power. And they take about three hours to charge back up after being used up.
The iON8024-XR requires both batteries to be used (at once) and includes a dual-charger, so you can charge up both at the same time.
Battery management is important with this snow blower, and you should be sure that your batteries are charged up before the snow flies. If you have a significant storm coming in, you’ll want to time your use of the snow blower around the battery charging schedule, which is a bit of a pain, depending on how much you need to use it.
Also, if you’re super-reliant on charging the battery during a snowstorm, you’ll need to be concerned about power outages, so consider that as well!
Supplemental Battery
Many buyers will want to pick up a pair of the Snow Joe iBAT40XR expansion batteries. These batteries have a larger capacity, and a single battery will run for 65 minutes. They’re definitely worth the price, as a set of these batteries, coupled with the two other smaller batteries, will give a good deal of running time.

Conclusion: Snow Joe Reviews
As we have seen in this article, Snow Joe has a pretty solid product line, with a wide variety of price points and capabilties. Their electric snow blowers are generally quite good, and Snow Joe is known for handling customer service and warranty issues very well.
Depending on your snow clearing needs, environment, and price points, Snow Joe has a snow blower that will accomplish what you want (or maybe a snow blower and a power shovel!).
All the items on our list today are pretty solid, though if you’re leaning toward the two-stage models, we would recommend you spring for the more expensive, newer design of the iON8024-XR. And plan on getting some extra batteries, should you have a reasonably large area to clear.
Stay safe this winter while cleaning up snow. And be sure to throw down some pet-safe ice melt on your sidewalks when you’re done, to ensure that others are safe as well!
