The Details

The Handy Home Products Monterey Oval Cedar Gazebo kits are beautiful as is, but are not complete. These kits do not include several items, such as the floor kit, roof shingles, flower boxes, screen kit, and benches. See our Assembly and Installation and Accessories sections for more information.

It arrives unstained, and can be treated with stain, a sealer, or left natural to weather.

The kit comes pre-cut and pre-drilled, which eliminates the need for sawing or significant carpentry. Unfortunately, the wood is imported and is not FSC certified.

Assembly and Installation

Assembly of these DIY gazebo kits is not difficult if you have some knowledge of construction. You can get the general frame up in about a day, assuming two people are working on the kit. The screws are not the best quality, and you may end up breaking some of them during the installation process. You may want to stock up on some additional wood screws just in case.

To complete the look you may need to hire some contractors. Specifically, the roof shingles need to be installed, which is the sort of task generally accomplished by a professional. The slope on the roof is not severe, but we encourage you to be cautious if you choose to install the roof shingles yourself! The pre-cut OSB roof panels are included, but no shingles are shipped with the base package.

You can purchase tar paper and roof shingles from your local home improvement store in a wide variety of shades and colors. You’ll need seven bundles of shingles to cover the roof.

Should you wish to install the gazebo on a cement pad, you can do so. A variety of fasteners will work. We suggest you contact Handy Home Products for details, depending on your situation.

The Flooring Kit

Made of the same knotty cedar material as the rest of the Monterey wooden gazebo kit, the flooring kit features select tight knot cedar, with a pressure-treated frame. The frame comes pre-drilled, with all of the fasteners required for installation.

The octagonal spiral design of the flooring is beautiful, and will really add a significant amount of personality to the Monterey gazebo!

If you’re installing the Monterey gazebo kit on an existing wooden deck, you likely won’t need the flooring kit. If you intend to put the gazebo on a lawn or patio, the kit may be a nice feature.

The Two Tier Roof Kit

The two-tier roof kit really adds to the pizzazz of this gazebo! The metal cap and wooden finials increase the old-timey charm, and the second tier provides some much-needed verticality.

It is made of the same high-quality knotty cedar material as the rest of the gazebo kit, but like the first tier roof, does not include roof shingles.

All of the holes are pre-drilled, and all of the hardware is included on this gazebo roof kit. The instructions on how to build the roof are fairly simple and should go up in no time.

The Bench/Table Kit

Handy Home Products supplies a bench/table kit, that is attached to the gazebo in a couple of different ways depending on the intended use. It can be attached inside or out and can be used as either a bench, if placed low on a gazebo wall, or as a table if placed at table height.

The bench/table kit is made of the same beautiful knotty cedar material as the rest of the gazebo, and includes the decorative wooden brackets as well! All holes are pre-drilled, and all nails and hardware are included with the bench. Simple instructions explain how to mount the bench/table in the desired configuration. The size of the bench/table kit is 15″ x 16″ x 48″.

Flower Planter Box

Should you like the idea of a matching flower box kit for your gazebo, Handy Home Products supplies a flower box kit to match their DIY gazebo kits.

These flower box kits are easy to build and are attached to the railings of the main kit. They add a great deal of visual interest to the gazebo, and bring the smell of fresh flowers to mix with the smell of the cedar wood!

These planter boxes feature a carved front panel and are made of the same knotty cedar as the rest of the gazebo. The interior of the box is constructed of a plastic liner, and the plants sit inside the liner.

The kit is easy to assemble. All fasteners are included, and no cutting is required to install this.

The Bottom Line

The quality of these gazebo kits is excellent, and once up they will look beautiful in your patio or garden space. However, the full kit with all the accessories needed to complete the gazebo makes it a costly endeavor!

The second wooden gazebo kit on our list is also made by Handy Home Products and is the San Marino octagonal gazebo, 10′ wide. This gazebo is in the traditional octagon shape and is still large enough for small tables, and for good sized seating arrangements.

Available in two sizes, 10′ round and 12′ round, these kits are easy to assemble and look fantastic (shown here in 10′ model)

Like the Monterey kit above, this gazebo kit has a few accessories that may or may not be needed to complete the look you’re after.

Assembly and Installation

If you have a little knowledge of building kit furniture and a little knowledge of construction, you should be able to put the frame of these wooden gazebo kits together in about an afternoon, assuming there are two-three people working. Everything is pre-cut, and the main tools you’ll need are a good cordless drill, a hammer, some batteries, a level, and a ladder or two.

The kit does not include the roof shingles, and to complete construction you may need to hire some professional contractors. The pre-cut OSB roof sheathing is included in the package, but no shingles are shipped with the base package.

The Details

The San Marino wooden gazebo kit kits all the right notes. It is fairly easy to assemble, is long-lived, and will supply countless memories to you and your family for decades. Even generations!

These kits come as untreated raw knotty cedar and should be stained and/or treated with a Thompson’s Water Seal or similar. It’s much easier to do this prior to assembly of these units. Alternately, you can let these gazebos weather naturally, which can be extremely beautiful as well, though not everyone loves the weathered look.

The Flooring Kit

Made of the same knotty cedar material as the rest of the San Marino wooden gazebo kit, the flooring kit for this unit is made of select tight knot cedar, with a pressure-treated frame. The frame comes pre-drilled, and all of the fasteners required for installation are included in the package

The octagonal design of the flooring blends nicely with the rest of the gazebo, and in our opinion is a must if you plan to install the gazebo anywhere other than a wooden deck.

If you’re installing the San Marino gazebo kit on an existing wooden deck, you likely won’t need the flooring kit.

The Two Tier Roof Kit

Similar to the Monterey gazebo kit, the San Marino kit also has an optional two-tier roof kit. The additional second roof makes the overall gazebo look more polished and custom, and a little bit less like a kit.

Made of the same high-quality knotty cedar as the rest of the San Marino kit, this second tier brings the eye skyward. Like the main kit, roof shingles are not included in this package.

Assembly and installation are pretty easy, and the holes are pre-drilled and ready to go. The assembly instructions are simple, though we encourage you to be careful when walking on the slopes of the main gazebo roof!

The Bench/Table Kit

Finding good seating for a gazebo can be difficult, as the panels of each wall aren’t terribly long, and furnishing an octagonal room is a bit awkward. Fortunately, Handy Home Products supplies a bench/table kit, that gets attached to the gazebo walls in a couple of different ways depending on the intended use. It can be attached either inside or out and can be used as a bench or a table, depending on the height configuration. It is 15″ x 16″ x 48″

The bench/table kit is made of the same unstained knotty cedar material as the rest of the gazebo and includes the decorative wooden brackets. All holes are pre-drilled, and all nails and hardware are included. The assembly and installation instructions are pretty well done.

Screens and Door Kit

The San Marino gazebo kit has an optional screen assembly, that encases the entire structure in an insect screen, and creates a door with a latch as opposed to an open entryway.

The kit is complete and includes 7 screen panels, 1 screen door panel, self-closing hinges, a door latch, and all necessary hardware.

The kit is well made, though some users have commented that the latching mechanism isn’t the greatest. These units are easy to assemble and come in the same matching unstained knotty cedar as the main kit.

Flower Planter Box

You can spruce up the monolithic wood look of the San Marino gazebo kit with these optional flower boxes.

They attach to the railings around the gazebo and make the experience of seeing and spending time in the gazebo feel much warmer and homier.

Designed with a carved front panel, these boxes are made of the same knotty cedar as the rest of the gazebo. The interior of the box where the plants reside is constructed of a plastic liner and is easy to install and remove.

Assembly and Installation

The Yardistry Cedar Pavilion kit is fairly easy to assemble, but it will take two people at least an afternoon to get it all together. Everything is pre-cut, so there’s no need to break out the saw. All hardware is included, and the metal mounting brackets that slip into the posts are included in the package.

To install onto a concrete patio or onto a wooden deck, simply screw the mounting brackets into the base material. These screws are not included, but Tapcon Concrete screws are what you’re looking for.

If you intend to install this onto a lawn or onto paver blocks, you’ll need to pour a concrete footing and mount the posts to the footing. This pavilion should not be installed solely onto paver blocks, as they are not strong enough to support the frame.

The Details

The Yardistry 12′ x 10.5′ cedar pavilion kit is noteworthy in design. It has a classic, almost Greek look, with thick wooden trusses and eye-catching curved gussets for a bit of accent. The posts are a thick 6″ x 6″ in design, with hidden metal brackets inside, and attractive plinth blocks to cover the brackets.

The details are modest but present, and this pavilion would blend in with most design styles, from modern to transitional to traditional. Great for dining sets, outdoor cooking, and outdoor seating, this pavilion can function however you need!

The DIY pavilion kit comes pre-stained and should be treated with an outdoor sealer. It’s easier to coat the wood with the sealer prior to installation than it is after you have it all assembled.

The beautiful roof on the Avery Pavilion is made of aluminum and is included as part of the package.

The Bottom Line

This gorgeous cedar pavilion kit by Yardistry is extremely high quality, with an interesting overall look, thick, weighty beams, and a simple, effective aluminum roof.

The price of these units isn’t cheap, but the design is attractive and the size is appropriate for a large variety of uses.
