Yimby Tumbler Composter Review
Successful organic farming requires quality composting of organic materials. These materials often come from organic kitchen leftovers, leaves, and other carbon-rich lawn and garden materials. However, digging compost pits can be hard work, so more and more organic farmers rely on manufactured composters to provide them a well-cooked compost in an organized, clean fashion.
Yimby has developed an excellent solution in its tw0-chamber rotating compost tumbler. This unit is sleek, simple, and efficiently produces large amounts of compost.

The Details
The Yimby Composter helps gardeners to make great, healthy soil. This soil, in turn, helps plants to grow, and provide healthy food for you and your family. It also helps the environment by keeping reusing organic waste on site, rather than trucking it away to be used elsewhere.
Aesthetics
The Yimby Tumbling Composter has a modern look that is designed to not draw attention to itself. The tumbler is constructed with a rich black color and octagon-prism shape with 8 side panels.
It is somewhat similar to a barrel composter but positioned vertically and raised up from the ground. The most elegant aesthetic feature of this composter is its smooth textured plastic panels that you touch comfortably.
Functionality
The device processes organic waste over a period of days, and the only action required by users is to turn the composter approximately 5-6 times, every 2-3 days.
Dual Chamber Design
The two composting chambers of the Yimby Composter enable you to place organic materials in one chamber, while at the same time allowing the other chamber to cooking existing compost. This will allow continuous swapping of compost and uninterrupted generation of compost material.
Adding Compost
As you generate organic waste, you add it to one of the chambers of the composter. The compost will cook in the chamber and will be broken down over the course of two weeks.
Add some Compost Starter/Accelerator to the waste to kick off the process, and tumble the compost as mentioned above. After filling it with organic materials, make sure to close the sliding cover to avoid unwanted rainwater and other non-organic materials from getting into the tumbler.
Air Circulation
For proper air circulation or aeration, the Yimby Compost Tumbler has two air vents located on the sides of the tumbler. Additionally, there are mid-panel couples, with deep fins to effectively break up clumps. To avoid dripping and odor, make sure to aim for a 25:1 carbon ratio. To achieve this, you’ll want to add leaves and carbon-rich materials along with your kitchen waste.
The Yimby Tumbling Composter allows you to produce 37 gallons of compost every 2 weeks. Make sure to cut the waste materials into small piece to speed up the decomposition.
Temperature
Keeping the compost in the right temperature range is necessary to get things rolling as quickly as possible. You generally want to keep the temperature of the compost above 55′ F. Going below this temperature can slow composting.
You also don’t want to get the tumbler too hot. If you leave it in direct sun, the panels will heat up, and it will burn the compost. Be sure to use a thermometer, and check if there is moderate heat in the compost: hot enough to cook the compost but not too hot to burn it.
Materials and Build Quality
The primary tumbler is made of recycled plastic, and the legs are made of sturdy steel. The plastic panels that make up the tumbler are BPA Free and UV inhibited to prevent fading. The UV resistance means that it can sustain a whole day of direct exposure to the sun without melting or deformation.
The galvanized steel frame that supports the tumbler is 100% corrosion resistant and can be left out in the weather as needed.
The stand is stable, but can still be blown by strong winds or be flipped over by large animals e.g. dogs, bears, deer and the like. Place it in a secure area on your lawn, out of direct sun.
Assembly
Assembly of the Yimby Tumbling Composter is a bit of a pain, so be prepared. There are a whole bunch of screws that you’ll need to install, and if you’re lucky and skilled, it should take about an hour. If you struggle, it could take much longer than that. It has 56 screws, so you may want to charge up that battery powered drill!
It can often be helpful to take a look at the assembly instructions prior to purchase, so you can see what you’ll be getting into once the composter arrives. You can view the instructions here to get a sense of the difficulty.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Just remove one or two panels in the tumbler and use a water hose to wash off composts and other organic materials.
Accessories
The most important accessory that you may or may not need is a bag of Compost Starter/Accelerator. This starter will supply the microbes necessary to begin the composting process, and speed things along if the microbes get depleted over time.
The Bottom Line
The YIMBY Composite Tumbler is an excellent garden composter and is a must-have for many backyard gardeners. It works efficiently, is easy to operate, is made of high-quality materials, and is reliable and sturdy.
The Yimby compost tumbler is a great addition to any garden and is a great choice for a tumbling composter, given its price point.
Be prepared for some gripes in the assembly process, but once you have it together, it will help make great, healthy food for you and your family for years to come!

The sliding door MUST be separate (left & right) with overlapping because you can’t “roll it” to unload. Even have a bigger opening.
The support is so unstable .
